Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is one of the largest and most stunning mosques in the world. Here are some of the key attractions and features that make it a must-visit:

Architecture: The mosque blends modern and traditional Islamic architecture, with 82 domes, over 1,000 columns, and intricate carvings. The white marble used throughout gives it a radiant, almost ethereal look. The Main Prayer Hall: This is the heart of the mosque, and it's breathtaking. The hall is home to the world’s largest carpet (measuring over 5,600 square meters) and the chandelier made from millions of Swarovski crystals. The Courtyard: The mosque’s expansive courtyard features beautiful flower patterns inlaid in marble, creating a stunning visual. It’s the perfect place for photos and quiet reflection. The Reflective Pools: Surrounding the mosque are large pools of water that mirror the mosque's architecture, amplifying its beauty, especially at sunrise and sunset. The Gardens: Lush gardens surround the mosque, adding to the peaceful, serene atmosphere of the site. The Qibla Wall and Mihrab: The intricately designed wall marks the direction of Mecca, where Muslims face during prayer. The Mihrab (niche) is beautifully decorated with Islamic calligraphy and floral patterns. The Prayer Area for Women: A dedicated space for women within the mosque is beautifully decorated and offers a peaceful area for prayer. Cultural Center: The mosque offers cultural and educational experiences for visitors, including free guided tours that explain the history, design, and significance of the mosque. The Lighting at Night: At night, the mosque is illuminated with a changing light show that reflects the lunar calendar and the mosque’s mood, making it even more mesmerizing. When visiting, it’s important to remember to dress modestly as it’s a place of worship. Guided tours are available to help you appreciate all the intricate details and history of the mosque.

The Grand Mosque was constructed between 1994 and 2007 and was inaugurated in December 2007.The building complex measures approximately 290 by 420 m (950 by 1,380 ft), covering an area of more than 12 hectares (30 acres), excluding exterior landscaping and vehicle parking. The main axis of the building is rotated about 12° south of true west, aligning it in the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The project was launched by the late president of the U.A.E., Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who wanted to establish a structure that would unite the cultural diversity of the Islamic world with the historical and modern values of architecture and art.In 2004, Sheikh Zayed died and was buried in the courtyard of the mosque. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center (SZGMC) offices are located in the west minarets. SZGMC manages the day-to-day operations and serves as a center of learning and discovery through its educational cultural activities and visitor programs. The library, located in the northeast minaret, serves the community with classic books and publications addressing a range of Islamic subjects: sciences, civilization, calligraphy, the arts, and coins, including some rare publications. The collection comprises material in a broad range of languages, including Arabic, English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, and Korean. For two years running, it was voted the world's second favourite landmark by TripAdvisor.

The mosque is absolutely stunning, with breathtaking decorations and beautiful chandeliers that make it truly worth seeing. However, visitors should be aware of several things before going. First of all, the entrance to the mosque is only accessible through a shopping mall. From there, you’ll be directed to the mosque. One important note: they do not rent out abayas or sheilas, so either come dressed appropriately or be prepared to purchase them on-site. Once you arrive, your clothing will be checked by a female security guard who enforces a very strict and somewhat inconsistent dress code. In our case, we were told that our abayas had to be buttoned all the way down because a slight part of our legs was visible, even though we were fully covered according to Islamic standards. When we pointed this out, the response was, This is not about Islam, it's just our dress code. Meanwhile, we saw other women with much more revealing outfits being allowed in without issue, which made the rules feel a bit arbitrary. Photography is also heavily controlled. I briefly removed my headscarf to take a few quick photos, and a security guard immediately came and made me delete them. Guards are present everywhere, and they restrict where you can stand or walk—even the grass is off-limits. Inside the mosque, movement is also limited. Certain areas are roped off, and in the main prayer hall, you're only allowed to peek inside from a designated section. You can’t walk freely or take photos in many parts of the mosque. Another thing to note: most of your visit will take place outdoors, so if you plan to come during the day, be prepared for intense heat. When you exit the mall and walk toward the mosque, they offer umbrellas—but you'll only need them for about 3 minutes. Still, be mindful of the weather. That said, in terms of architecture and artistry, the mosque is a true masterpiece. The combination of white marble, intricate floral designs, and sparkling crystal chandeliers creates a peaceful and awe-inspiring atmosphere. The symmetry and scale of the building are breathtaking, and even the smallest decorative details reflect an extraordinary level of craftsmanship. It’s one of those places where you can simply stand still and feel humbled by its beauty. To summarize: if you want to see a visually beautiful mosque and take some photos, it’s a good place to visit. But be prepared for strict enforcement of arbitrary rules and a very controlled tourist experience. The mosque is gorgeous, but the way tourists are treated could definitely be more welcoming.
