Came here from Sheffield with my 2 daughters to meet a friend and her son from Derby. The museum has a lot of stuff to be admired but not touched - understandably! It's so old! But they had put on a "challenge the Victorians!" event, and the kids were never fussed over not being able to mess with stuff, because there was so much to do besides! There we plenty of really friendly staff (dressed as Victorians) that were on hand to introduce and explain the Victorian games and to help us play. The staff had saintly patience with the kids. We really enjoyed our time at the mill today. Shortly before leaving, a staff member told us of a newly redone park just round the corner by the river - if we'd had more time we'd have gone to explore it. But alas we had to leave, so agreed we'd definitely return and do the museum again when they next...

I visited without knowing anything about north mill. I was welcomed by 2 lovely women in the visitor centre, one who gave me 'the tour'. She was knowledgeable and informative and it was really interesting to hear about the history of the building and the cotton trade in the local area. The bit of the mill open to the public is not a large area but it's close to a historic area of houses, the old school, riverside gardens etc. Which is also well worth doing and I was armed with town maps from the centre to help me on my way. If this review dosen't spark your interest then knowing that it is part of a world heritage site should! One other thing, the £5.00 entrance fee I paid is valid for a year for any adult to use. It was a...

Enjoyed a guided tour of the world's first fire proof building. Unfortunately this piece of history will be closing down thanks to the council. I would recommend a visit asap it really is interesting and made informative by the guides. Hopefully all the movable artifacts and machinery will find a new home and carry on being displayed elsewhere. The walks and tours include inside and outside the mills, the river gardens, long row, nail shop and Joseph street. We spent an hour on the mill tour and a further hour browsing the artifacts and information. Drinks are available in the foyer along with souvenirs, books, information leaflets. Free car park. Admission is £5 which gives a year pass, and Derbyshire day...

Great value history tour for £5. The volunteer guide was informative and helpful. Most of the history is centred around the spinning machines and the basement architecture which supports the mill. It’s a shame you can’t glimpse a floor in the mill to gain a sense of scale. I studied A level Economic History so all my memories of spinning mechanisation came flooding back. I think the tour could be enhanced by more story telling through the life of individuals working at the mill to visualise a working day/week/life as a mill worker, or a gaffer, or a mother of a family etc. This can really bring a historic place to life. We very much enjoyed the dressing up opportunity.

A fascinating tour by David in a museum that lets you see how cotton was spun and learn the history of the factory and surrounding area. Visiting the basement floor and looking at where the workings were was really interesting. Apparently this museum is under threat of closure which is a great pity though not a huge surprise really because it wasn't very visible around Belper aaaaaand the parking seemed a bit of an afterthought. Still, it was wonderful wandering in the sunshine around the lanes nearby where workers lived.
