This is a great little place for steam locomotive enthusiasts, I take my train mad child quite often and the people who run the shed are friendly and informative - even taking my boy onto the footplate and teaching him the controls. There is also the provision of a nice little cafe with activities for little ones. We used to visit the West Shed quite often by accessing via a footpath that runs by the Midland Railway line, however unfortunately this is now blocked so access is only via paying to ride the Midland...

Lots of interesting train-related things, from a dynamometer car, a miniature Butlins train and of course the magnificent steam trains. Plenty of interesting facts about trains and their history. Basic refreshments were offered too when we were there, nothing fancy but tea in a mug and ice cream was just the thing we needed! Some bits and pieces for children to play with too, again nothing fancy but it will kept mine happily occupied for...

Lovely museum and friendly staff, which is unfortunately located within the midland railway, but isnt part of it. They have a royal coach which if you ask, you can go in. Theres also a cafe to get a cup of tea, and they are dog friendly. Two large Princess class locos are normally resident here, but they do occasionally get loaned out. Very nice exhibits, which is more than i can say about the Midland...

Visited the West Shed when on a visit to midland Railway Centre, well worth a look and it is hidden out of the way. It has trains and carriages in the shed, shop and even somewhere to get a drink. Upstairs there is a craft and play area for kids along with a model railway. They don’t get any funding at all from the tickets from the main Trainline so it is worth a donation to them.

Very interesting museum, especially if you are interested in railways and you can see all work in progress, more than a days visit required to view everything, there's plenty and much to see... A canteen is available and open to the public... I will certainly visit again and return for a longer visit in the near future... Very impressive...
