Had been looking forward to visiting this place for over 20 years, but was very sad to discover a huge amount of very pretentious eateries with rude and uppity staff. Locals are nice enough, but not very welcoming. An older local "posh" lady walking with her dog off a leash on the beach let her dog jump on me and eat all my packed lunch while I was sitting in a corner trying to find some solace. She just called the dog and said "If you keep misbehaving, I shall put you on a leash" but actually didn't and 20 minutes later the dog came out of nowhere again and jumped on me and finished off the can of tuna I had salvaged from the first raid. This might seem funny to read, but in the middle of a Pandemic when you are sad at not being close to friends and family and not seeing your own mother for 9 months, and you try to find some peace in nature, it's not acceptable, especially if you think, that had that been the other way sround (young woman visiting with dog who jumps twice on older local lady..) that would have been the end of the world, and seeing the type of people there, I'm sure they would have called the police! Shame. I had high...

Read moreLovely day to visit. Peak summer season so busy with long queues at eating establishments. Nice enough harbour area. Just a few of the harbour market units were open so if browsing in the harbour market is important to you, check the opening times. 'Promenade', such as it is, is OK. It all has a bit of a run down feel to it, especially as you walk further west. Plenty of places to eat and oysters is the local delicacy. A good alternative for vegetarians is the Whitstable Produce Store for light snacks. Swimming was once again allowed following the latest Southern Water sewage discharge last weekend. The water didn't look particularly inviting but there were some brave souls swimming in it and canoeing/windsurfing. Plenty of parking is available and you can pay with the Ringo app so no need to have lots of change for machines. Used the Oyster car park as that's right next to the harbour. Free toilets are located right next to the car park (though the public toilets are not the best to be honest just serviceable). So yeah. Nice day out. The place could just do with a generous...
