Epic little walk along the coast (rocky coastline not sand) to dunstanbourgh Castle. Go early though as the car park is reasonably small at Craster. You have to pay with cash only which is reasonably priced, and there's limited parking for disabled users. There is toilets at the car park and an information centre should you need it. Theres a lovely little coffee deli there also selling all kinds of brews and goodies including hot food.
The walk to dunstanborough Castle from Craster car park is approximately 1.5 miles, the path is reasonable and grassed, with the odd cobbles and mud as you would expect.it is reasonably flat along the way which is ok for an appropriate buggy should you take the little uns. The castle it self is run by English heritage and charge for going inside, nothing else is provided in the castle, no toilets or food and drinks ect, but there are plenty of spots to take a picnic and enjoy the views. Dogs are welcomed along the way, but must remain on a lead as there is live stock in the fields you walk through, and the farmers don't take kindly to dogs running free. Trust me on that.
Craster is a little fishing village which has a couple of pubs, cafes and a good fish and chip shop. You can also get the famous Craster smokies which are very good and a good price.
If your lucky enough you may be blessed with the pod of dolphins that swim in this area, which was a very pleasant surprise to see. I counted 8 but there's could...
Read moreWe didn't actually spend the day at Craster as Covid meant it was heaving and we wanted friends to see the castle. But we went up the coast to the other side of Dunstanburgh castle and as ever it was magnificent. We came back to Craster late afternoon for a very late lunch and the pub is doing a fish and chip cabin. All was very good given it was their first official frying day and we got the first batch. Obvs you have to buy kippers so that was done along with crab. For veggies the local cheeses are good. But, if you want the smoked salmon, word is it's done on Monday and pretty much sold out by Wednesday. And the local gallery so has some absolutely stunning stuff, I have a much loved and treasured copper kipper bracelet by a local...
Read moreCraster Harbor, famous for smoked fish known as Craster Kippers and home of the Coble - an open traditional fishing boat, hasn't changed for decades, apart from there being no Coble boats around now. With wood smoke curling out of Robson & Sons fish smokehouse, the North Sea crashing against the Little Carr rocks to the North, the place evokes the history of a fishing harbour that's seen hard times over the years. Now a lively tourist destination with a range of places to relax, eat and enjoy a drink. One of the gems of the...
