It perches dramatically on a 120 ft cliff top, high above the Atlantic Ocean on the north-western coast of Northern Ireland, offering spectacular views westwards over Downhill Strand towards Magilligan Point and County Donegal and to the east Castlerock beach towards Portstewart, Portrush and Fair Head.

Built in 1785, it was inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Italy, and originally served as a library for Frederick Augustus Hervey, the 4th Earl of Bristol (and Bishop of Derry—he was both nobleman and churchman, which is already a story in itself).

What makes it extra striking is its location: the temple is balanced right on a cliff 120 feet above the Atlantic, with sweeping views of Downhill Strand below. The cliff has eroded so much over the centuries that the temple was once in danger of falling into the sea, but stabilization work saved it.
