Downhill Mauoleum, located near Castlerock in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, is a magnificent historic estate managed by the National Trust. The site features the ruins of Downhill House, a grand mansion built in the 18th century by Frederick Augustus Hervey, the Earl-Bishop of Derry. The estate is renowned for its breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and its picturesque grounds.

Two car park spots, one is on top of the hill and the other one is down;pay park area.coffee shop, picnic area and in 10 minutes convenient stores found.

The highlight of the property is Mussenden Temple, a circular structure perched dramatically on a cliff edge. Inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Italy, it was originally a library and is now one of the most photographed landmarks in Northern Ireland. The temple provides stunning views of Downhill Strand and the surrounding coastline.

The Demesne offer • Walking trails: Explore the ruins, gardens, and woodlands. • Beaches: Downhill Strand, below the cliffs, is a popular spot for walking and surfing. • History and architecture: Learn about the estate’s fascinating past and the Earl-Bishop’s eccentric personality.

It’s an excellent spot for photography, picnics, and immersing yourself in Northern Ireland’s rich heritage and...

Mussenden Temple, Downhill beach, Northern Ireland Game OF Thrones-burning seven old gods of westeros on dragonstone in season 2 In Cave below birth of monster by Mellisandra Mussenden Temple and Downhill beach ( Dragonstone Beach) This beautiful 11km stretch of golden sand and turf is best known for being the location of Mussenden Temple. This Classical round temple was built to be a summer library, while today it stands dramatically on top of a cliff, with views of the Northern Irish coast.

Both the Mussenden Temple and Downhill Beach were used in Game of Thrones as the location for the Dragonstone exterior. Remember the burning of the old gods by Melisandre on the beach? Well, that was here. And also where Stannis Baratheon draws a flaming sword from the flames, 'Lightbringer'. It's a gorgeous place, but better not burn anything and try to discover if you...

I would rank this as one of the most beautiful and majestic places within Northern Ireland, and among the top three on the north coast. With stunning views across the sea, both Northern Ireland and County Donegal can be easily seen, and on a bright, sunny day with clear blue skies the Scottish isles of Islay and Jura are visible on the horizon. Both the ruined Downhill House and the elegant Italianate Mussenden Temple provide a majestic, magical experience that will take you back in time, while gardens, rugged moorland and forest offer the delights of nature. The path atop the cliffs is subject to heavy gusts of wind so do be advised of this, but nevertheless it is a pleasant, relatively gentle walk that is perfect for a romantic stroll, a brisk walk or a dog's adventure. Whether you are a local or a tourist, this should be top on your...

There are some wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean and Downhill Beach from this location. The ruins are also worth visiting, although it should be noted that Mussenden Temple is currently closed to the public. My only two criticisms are, firstly, the fact that the trails particularly near the Black Glen Dam are very overgrown in places and, secondly, the £7.50 parking fee at the main Black Lion Gate carpark is expensive in my opinion. However, if you are a National Trust member, car parking is free. It is worth remembering that free roadside carparking is available outside of the Bishop's Gate entrance. The floral displays in the vicinity of the Bog Garden are also nice. There are plenty of picnic benches, a coffee kiosk and toilets in and around the main car park.
