A good day out but seriously busy on the ice. I attended as a carer for my son and entered free of charge including skate hire. Very much appreciated. I think booked slots for a smaller number would work out better and be a lot safer. I'd happily pay for a smaller slot for the same money if it meant less people on the ice. It was a great seeing others going for their first times and put us at ease. It was definitely a shared struggle for many with lots of funny moments. A couple of big collisions but luckily no casualties. Mainly caused by the mixed abilities of the people there with some borderline professionals swooping around at pace and others like Bambi trying to edge their way round the perimeter not daring to venture in to the path of of on coming speedsters. Entry and exit points are also a challenge as often crowded with lesser skilled skaters trying to access or leave the ice.m. Luckily for me and my son we managed to stay on our feet all bar one slip.
The skates we used were in an absolutely battered condition and I'd definitely recommend buying a cheap pair of your own if it's your thing. About £20-40 online or on high street.
I wanted to borrow one of the stabilising bears or penguins for my son and felt the member of staff seemed put out at the request as she reluctantly handed it over saying it's the last one and made a forgettable comment about whether it was needed. Most other staff seemed a little pre-occupied but friendly enough. My son did have a great first time on the ice and was getting the hang of it after a while. I'm not sure who was holding who up in the end.
The atmosphere over all was good and people were good spirited about other users on the whole. I'd definitely recommend lessons for a quieter experience or looking in to quieter times for beginners or less experienced skaters. A positive experience but definitely requires some TLC, organisation and possibly a bit better customer service.
Definitely worth a visit but after reading other reviews think this place needs to take notice as it's the same complaints repeated...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe went on the weekend for the grotto and the open skate. When arriving we went and got our skates i asked for a size 6 got a size 4 asked a member of staff if I can change to be told I need to speak to the person behind the desk but will have to line up again which wasn't happening as we had just lined up. They had no size 6 left so gave me a 7 which wasn't a big deal. We asked for an Aid for the 8 year old we had with us and was told there isn't any left but there was older teens on the ice with a good 3-4 of them Messing around on them or sitting down the side hogging them. Or families dragging them around and leaving them at the tables in the cafe with their belongings. We managed to get one in the end but again had a bunch of teenagers messing around throwing ice at each other and there was no member of staff on the ice or around the ice to keep an eye of what was going on. I feel they need to do multiple open skate timeslots a day as there was just so many people and you couldn't skate and spent a lot of it just standing on the ice. When taking skates back they was unable to find my shoes and had to go back and search for them. The lack of help and wanting to be there from the staff was clearly visible. Again no staff on the actual grounds last the skate desk to watch...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI was a bit nervous about my son's 8th birthday party at Planet Ice Gillingham. I have never been in this planet ice rink and I booked the party without reading any reviews. A couple days later I decided to look them up for some reasonš³ and the reviews were awful.
HOWEVER we had an amazing experience from start to finish. Booking the party on the website was simple. The ladies at the reception called me a couple days before the party to finalize the numbers and the food choices. Our party host(sorry, I forgot your name, but you were awesome š)was amazing and he was very attentive. We booked the 30mins coach session and Sharon(I think her name was Sharon... I'm sorry I'm terrible with namesš¤¦) was amazing with a bunch of 8-year olds who have the attention span of a snail(on a good day)when a cake is in plain sight(it's a joke)šš. She was great. The food was lovely. The pizza and the tater tots were from pizza hut and the kids gobbled all of them up after their 1 hour skating session. All the parents received a complementary hot drink. The birthday child received a 6 - week ice skating lesson voucher. We had a lovely time. It was an amazing experience.Thank you very much Planet Ice...
