t last the Cricket 100 at Headingly Leeds and we had the good sunny and warm weather for support. The match was the Northern Superchargers in purple colours against the Welsh Fire in red colours for both the women's and men's games. Each innings lasts 100 balls. The " Cricket 100" came into being in 2022.
We were packed up with a good supply of food and drinks by Christina and which could only be taken in plastic containers.
Grandson Edward and I got the 1.04 train from York to Leeds arriving to a packed Leeds station. We then caught the train to Burley Park which is near the Headingly Cricket Ground and arrived just after 2 o'clock. We had great seats in the family stand three rows from the boundary.
It was great to stand outside this great Yorkshire Cricket Ground and I would have loved to have played on it.
I was really impressed wth the number of families that were present with girls and boys of all ages enjoying themselves actually watching and enjoying a cricket match, where most people think it is boring.
But this was no ordinary cricket match, I must admit I have been to dozens of Test matches at Headingly over the years and played all over both in India and England and I must say this was the most enjoyable cricket day I have experienced.
The women's game started at 3pm between Northern Superchargers and Welsh Fire and there was some great cricket being played which the Northern Superchargers won. Between every ball bowled there was great music belting out by a DJ, and everytime a four or six was hit there was a billow of 20 foot live flames in parts of the ground and great cheers went up from the crowd and every one was waving their blue "Meerkat" glove.
There was an hours interval before the men's game and Edward and I enjoyed a tasty San Miguel pint in the Long Bar and some street food and listening to some fantastic live music being sung by Riya.
The men's game started at 6.30pm and the ground was full. The capacity of Headingly is 18,000, and I would put the crowd around 16,000. When the men's game started with Superchargers batting first, we were treated to some fantastic batting with Harry Brook knocking up 105 for Superchargers and it also being the fastest 100 in the " Hundred". He got his hundred in 42 balls.
It was a fantastic atmosphere and we even had the Mexican wave in the ground, and when the floodlights were on we had the Mexican wave with lights switched on our phones, and we were all shouting Superchargers. I could see the hundreds of children enjoying themselves.
Unfortunately the Yorkshire International Harry Brooks knock did not help as the batting of International Johnny Bairstow for the Welsh Fire won the match for them. But with the light fading the flood lights were switched on around 7.30pm which lent to the atmosphere of the game.
The match ended at 9pm and we made the train from Burley Park with a minute to spare. Today was proof that The Hundred is family friendly and full of fun and a great and enjoyable day among lovely people all enjoying...
Read moreDrove over from East Coast for this match where our team Leeds Rhinos were playing against our neighbours Hull KR (we live nearer to Hull).
We wanted to take our 6yr old grandson to his first home game at Headingley (also it was family day), as he absolutely adores Ronnie Rhino, and luckily we were able to get him a picture of him with Ronnie Rhino literally as soon as we came in the gates as he was meeting and having pictures with the young fans.
They also had free face painting for the kids which they all loved.
We had a model Balloon Rhino made as there was free balloon models for kids.
They had Creepy Creatures from the tv I think (snakes, spiders & other creepy crawlies) but we didn't have time to see them before the first match started.
It was a double header with both the mens team & academy teams from Leeds Rhinos playing against the mens & academy teams from Hull KR.
The way our team has played recently we were not expecting a great result, and as is usually the case lately, we were right not to expect much!
But anyway, as a wheelchair user, I cannot fault Headingley and their Disabled Facilities, as they're great.
Level access main entrances & shop entrances & ramps, and level access entry into the stadium & wheelchair users are sat pitch-side/level with the pitch so nobody standing in front of you and great view of the match.
Only slight issue is when stewards stand right in front of a wheelchair user and you ask them nicely to move slightly so you can actually see what you've paid to see and they act like they didn't hear you.
Also when the stewards get arsy & rude with people and demand to see their ticket even when they've just seen the person get up from their seat beside the wheelchair user they are accompanying and showed us to our seat not 10 minutes beforehand, and I understand that they see an awful lot of people, but as I say not even 10mins.
Headingley stadium is great though, especially for wheelchair users with all our needs catered for, but also for families, as I say their family day is excellent with free face painting, balloon models. Various experiences for the kids, sweet vendors and multiple different food trucks & ice cream van, plus kids under 16...
