An underrated gem, hidden away on the edge of Enfield. Neither my other half or I are particularly interested in transport and we have autistic twins in tow, so any day out comes with a bit of nervousness.
Needn't have worried, I think anyone would love a couple of hours here. We're in our mid forties and it made us both feel a bit mortal to find exhibits in a museum that we remembered using, but actually that made it better as we were able to engage with the children in a way we can't when it comes to dinosaurs or apollo landing craft.
There is a lot more here than just transport - if you don't mind heights ask to see the old pumping station well! I spent 2 minutes watching an 11 year old try to use a dial phone with no help or advice from me and I'm still laughing.
It was a surprise to find it was volunteer run, as it felt really 'professional', but that is down to the volunteers themselves for whom it's clearly a labour of love. A friendly bunch, many of whom restored the exhibits themselves and it really shows.
In short, go there. If I could give more stars I would.
EDIT: I'm under spousal instructions to add what a lovely spot the museum is in and how nice the cafe/picnic area is 😂😂 future reviews will be going to management for editorial approval...
Read moreYou can use the (DHL) STEVENAGE train for transportation to the museum. It’s a 10-minute walk from Crews Hill Station. Before even mentioning the beauty of the museum, what truly makes the visit appealing is the incredibly kind, helpful, and friendly museum staff. My children loved them so much that they were very happy when leaving the museum. I sincerely thank them.
The museum consists of a four-story building and a large outdoor area. On the first floor, you’re welcomed by magnificent historic vehicles. The second floor features motorcycles and a café area. The third floor includes a play area for children, old-fashioned children's bicycles and cars, and a museum section showcasing historical daily life items and essentials. The fourth floor presents a display of sewing machines, typewriters, cameras, home interiors, and handmade toys from the past.
In the outdoor area, there is a visual display of a model locomotive container and railway track. My children were fascinated by this. You can explore vintage vehicles such as fire trucks, ambulances, and milk delivery vans from around 1912, and with the sweet and attentive help of the staff, you can even experience...
Read moreThis fantastic motor museum is staffed by lovely and knowledgeable volunteers and features not only historic cars, motorcycles, and bikes, but also toys, models, typewriters, vintage interior decor, and exhibits relating to the history of this former pump station building. The museum seems tiny at first, but it is spread over four levels, with external engine sheds hosting fire engines, trucks, and an ambulance. Outside, you will also find a historic railway coach with working model railways. Please pay a visit to the cafe on the first floor to buy some drinks and hot/cold snacks and support this museum. There is a step-free side entrance and a lift to the first floor. It's definitely worth visiting, although it's a pity that it's open only on Tuesdays and last Sunday of the month. Many more visitors could enjoy it if some additional weekend openings could be arranged. This is a great place for kids, so plan your visit...
