Also known as Sutton Stop. At the Junction of Coventry and Oxford canals with fabulous old footbridge, Greyhound pub and facilities for boat owners, like toilets and watering points, and tank emptying facilities. NB the lock to enter Oxford canal is very narrow, ( you can jump across it if your fit or foolish, so it can only take narrow boats. It is approx 5 miles by canal to Coventry Canal Basin a stones throw from the city centre (nb it has limited mooring spaces)

For bikers and walkers Hawkesbury is a good place to join the Oxford Canal Path if you head east it is approx 11 miles to the Barley Mow Pub which sells food and has nice toilets and it has picnic benches by the canal. useful if you bring your own food. it's just beyond the tunnel and pretty close to Rugby itself. (See photos)

PS there are only a few parking spaces available at Hawkesbury on the left as you drive...

A very historic place on the canal network. Not only is there the equally historic pub 'The Greyhound but also Sutton Stop Lock, so called because of the family that provided the lock keepers and toll collector for generations. The junction itself still provides entertainment for boaters and onlookers alike. Many a boater still consider the junction a challenge to navigate in one especially if they are steering a...

Canal junctions are invariably interesting, but this one is deeply fascinating. The northern section of the Oxford Canal joins the Coventry Canal at this point. There is a graceful, cast iron roving bridge (serving the towpath) and the shell of the old pumping station. The "Greyhound Inn" at the junction provides refreshments and there is even a quaint, canal-side little stores.

Went here for lunch during a recent canal trip. It was just as good as we remembered it. We had their famous pies - a beef bourguignon and stilton and a chicken pot pie topped with pulled ham and a cheese cobbler. These came with nicely cooked veg and very good chips. Definitely no room for dessert!
