This is an amazing place to visit where you will see a beautiful example of 16th century buildings. We visited on a Saturday afternoon. It was wet and windy but we just did not care as the remains of this building is just so incredible.

The building is open to people and the elements. No tickets are needed as there is no ticket office near the castle to buy one. We just walked to the castle and were able to walk around and within the ruins. Walking around and with in the ruins for me was just mind blowing and I was trying to imagine what it would have been like in the years of its build and just after.

There is no toilet facilities or places to eat or get a drink, no places to rest or sit other than the grass surrounding the castle. It’s just an old castle on the edge of the Irish Sea.

What does this castle have? It has lots of walking and apparently some good walks around the coastal route. It has amazing and spectacular views, it has a truly back in time feeling and this was more than enough for us to visit. I could have spent all day there. I highly recommend if in the area of portpatrick you make...

Pretty cool place to explore. Be careful! Cliffs around it are steep. Your not supposed to enter it, but the fencing has long since been pulled down and the locked access gate has a large hole in it. Although it doesn't seem to have been vandalized, there is a LOT of rubbish in and around the castle. Ignoring that, and the resident pigeons and ravens, just take some time to appreciate that this is a 12th century building. 900 years ago, people were laying the stones that created this structure! I recommend you absorb some of this history. The castle sits atop the cliffs and looks over the Irish Sea to the Larne area of Ireland, which you can see on a clear day. There are some creepy, dark rooms in the castle, which really adds to the atmosphere. Pay attention to the structure and you'll see how it was built with a spiral staircase (now collapsed) and large, open fired with huge chimneys. Go find it and see...

An incredible location and wonderful castle to wander around for an hour or so. An enjoyable 15 minute walk from Portpatrick itself up some stairs and across the cliffs (or, if you’re lazy, drive to the nearby car park!) brings you upon this stunning ruin. Given entry is free (!) visiting it is an extra delight, and we enjoyed poking around the inside and outside, and thinking about those who made their home here long ago. If you are visiting anywhere in the Rhins, a visit to Dunskey Castle is a MUST for your visit!

Take note – those with mobility difficulties or very young children might need to take extra care: the ability to accidentally hurl yourself out of the window and down the cliffs here is a...

It’s a relatively short walk from Portpatrick to the Castle, which itself affords you wonderful views across the Irish Sea giving you a sense of the peninsulas connection with the Emerald Isle. The castle is in private ownership so is entirely accessible. You get a real sense of the layout, the kitchen and related rooms int he basement, the main hall with fireplaces that have flues still in place. You can see the staircases that connected the cellar to the hall or castle to upper floors. And all of this with amazing views out to the rocks below and the sea beyond. I would be cautious (very) with little ones as the castle is refreshingly clear of health and safety warnings.
