This is a great beach. It's cleared on a daily basis by a tractor in the morning. It's never busy so plenty of space for the kids to run about and paddle. It goes for a good 3/4 mile as well so good for a stroll along and back. If you have a pram there's a path/promenade that you can walk the full length as well Just of the beach is a good play park for kids. I'd recommend 11 and under with a balance obstacle course just next to it as well. During the summer season and out with covid there is a boating pond where you can hire a row boat which again is fun for the kids. Just recently you can now hire peddle carts. Head behind the swimming building to the containers. You can fit 2 or a family of 4 on, again fun for the kids. Only other things to mention are the amusement arcade on the corner across from the park and if you walk along 2 minutes past that there is a decent chippy. Everything you need for a family day...

There has clearly been a lot of attention to making the beach nice, but unfortunately the overall effect of the beach grooming (it appeared to have been raked flat but some tractor-drawn equipment) was of the aftermath of an industrial clean up. Also, although dogs were allowed on the beach, the warning signs that dogs must be kept under control seems to have led to everyone marching their dogs along on leads...a rather joyless sight. I expect we just caught things at a bad time and in the hight of a sunny summer (we were there on a grey September day) it was a different place, but we didn't feel like we wanted to stay long. On the upside, parking on the seafront was free and the beach is sheltered, wide and long and covered in clean deep sand. And I'm told you can usually pick up fresh lobster...

This is a really lovely place for a day out at a grand beach. Facilities are really excellent, mind to bring a credit/debit card to get into the toilets in the harbour. No, I am not joking. But they are really clean and well kept.

Cafe and ice cream, fish and chip lunch, not a problem here.

Quite place, long beach, great walk & kids play park. Along with a great working harbour to wander around. Be careful, mind it is a working harbour.

The only thing is the town centre is looking very tired. Its been hit hard by the pandemic and local businesses shutting down. But still enough to get you shopping. I'm sure once we are out of the pandemic low the high Street will jump back to a thriving, cracking place again.

Another West coast star, a must visit for families to...

One of the winners of Scotland's beach awards for 2021. A long expanse of sand runs for several miles offering great views of the Ailsa Craig and the island of Arran. Just behind the beach to the northern end lies a well equipped kids play park. In summer months the boating pond opens for pedalos which also offers a putting course on the nearby grassed areas. The north area, near the harbour, which also holds the main car park, toilet block, bike rental and the Quay Zone (swimming pool and soft play) has two nearby arcades and a number of places that offer ice creams or take away food. 5 minutes walk takes you to the main street. Clean and with plenty of facilities, it's a great beach to visit and, on a clear day, offers great sunsets out over the water

The beach at Girvan is beautifully sandy and the water is clear. We arrived late in the evening and had a great time photographing some seascapes with the island of Ailsa Craig on the horizon. There is an amusement arcade there - the first we have found on our visit to south west Scotland - but sadly it had closed just minutes after our arrival. With the arcade, sandy beach, clear water to swim in, nearby park and play area and chance to explore the town and local area, we feel a family could easily enjoy an inexpensive few hours here whilst on holiday. The parking on the harbour was free and there were plenty of spaces, although we are not sure how busy it gets in the daytime on a warm sunny summer's day.

I actually came here for a bit of 'Deja Vu'. I did my boat skippers course in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland and one of the practical navigation tasks was to cruise from Carrickfergus to Girvan as skipper. It was the first of many tests but visiting Girvan on this coastline holds a special place in my memories. After I achieved my skippers 'ticket; I was later able to cruise from Ireland around Europe. If you're interested in boats and cruising go to Amazon books, type in 'Encore' or 'Windmills and Wine' books by me, Geoff Woolley and enjoy. And it all started along this coat and harbour !
