Went in the the coffee shop today to get a bit of late lunch. There were only two tables occupied at the time who had already been served. We waited to be served at our table as per instructions displayed on the way in but staff started serving people who had arrived after us and decided to go up to the counter. Decided to go up to the counter ourselves by then as there were now eight occupied tables and still no sign of table service after ten minutes. Myself and a man from another table were told to wait at our seats to be served. Not politely. Duly returned to our tables and waited another 10 minutes. Still no sign of service. My toddler was screaming with boredom and hunger so we decided to leave after a 25 minute wait, as did the other family at the table next to us. Would not bother going back. Only options were really soup and sandwich or quiche anyway. The second hand bookshop bit looked quite nice. Went to Galloway Lodge place across the road above the Spar which was very nice so it worked out...
Read moreVery good museum, great book shop and nice local makers exhibitions too. But highlight was the cafe. Really nice food, staff very friendly. Serving a limited selection of food but enough for us to choose from. Cheese and onion pasties really tasty, they had some interesting soups and the good cake offerings all made by local people. Non profit making organisation took over The Fleet and have made it a great place to visit. We went last November but unfortunately it was closed, glad we returned for another visit this year, definitely worth it. Beautiful water mill building, despite being in the middle of the town was very quiet. So pleased we went on a Monday as there was free entertainment in the form of local amateur musicians who played a fantastic selection of bluegrass, folk and a couple of Scottish songs thrown in for good measure. It was fabulous listening to them while eating our lunch, we even joined in with them...
Read moreWorth a visit. You can fill your belly with good food (carrot cake is especially nice) from the cafe downstairs and visit the gallery, book shop and learn quite a lot about local history upstairs. There's also a tourist information there with leaflets, walking trails etc. Also, a detailed map/model of Gatehouse of Fleet. The galery features arts and crafts made by the local artists. We were there soon after they reopened after the lockdown and they only served cakes, scones and tea and coffee. Staff are nice. Toilets are clean. John Watt's coffee seems to be popular in the area. You need to decide whether it's to your taste or not. Seats are available inside and out. On a nice day it's nice to sit outside. River Fleet runs right by the mill and there's plenty of...
