I had a fantastic time! This free exhibition has so much history, culture and also passion of the people doing it behind it and is well worth a trip for anyone! I was given a „wee“ tour of the stones and my guide, Scott, took over an hour to tell me historical and artistic details and explain theories about the stones. It was magical and I felt like a kid at christmas learning more about these stones. They‘re beginning probing the churchyard again just now and I even got to look at a grave marker they had just uncovered and meet the professor working on the dig. I would encourage everyone who can to leave a donation so they can invest even more into this great project...

This is a hidden gem amongst Glasgow's many museums and galleries. Based in Govan Old Parish Church, entrance is free and the site curated a quite spectacular collection of "hogback" Viking era grave markers. Additionally there are exhibits highlighting the Govan's central political role in the Kingdom of Strathclyde following the Viking sack of the original capital at Dumbarton. The staff are enthusiastic and knowledgeable and we're more than happy to give is background in the exhibits even allowing is to stay on after...

Really quite an amazing place to stumble upon. Just around the corner from the station sits an archaeological treasure. A site that has been active for over 1000 years with battles and cultural clashes. The stones are magical bringing the days of Vikings and ancient tongues back to life. There is an active dig in the graveyard and a lovely patch of wildflowers leading to the riverside. While the visit can be thoroughly enjoyed in an hour, the history will linger with you...

Glasgow's Govan Old Parish Church is home to an amazing group of early medieval cut stones known as the Govan Stones. From the 9th century to the 11th century AD, this place is full of fascinating history. The beautiful Govan Sarcophagus is one of the stones. People believe it honors St. Constantine, the son of the Pictish king Kenneth MacAlpin. The detailed designs on these stones, which show everything from hunting scenes to stylized animals, are stunning.

Excellent and underrated! Scott was a spectacular guide and went to great efforts to bring to life the fascinating history of the Govan stones, local history such as the Viking presence, etc. This was one of the BEST things we did during our recent visit to Glasgow and indeed all Scotland. Highly recommend it, and it was FREE, but please do support them with a donation in the cash box and gift shop, as the upkeep of this site is a worthy cause.
