Hillsborough Castle and Gardens offers a captivating experience in Northern Ireland, blending rich history with stunning natural beauty. It's the official royal residence in Northern Ireland, and a place where significant political events, including discussions leading to the Good Friday Agreement, have taken place. Things to Do and See: The Castle and State Rooms (Guided Tour Recommended): Immerse in History: The castle itself, a grand Georgian stately home rather than a traditional fortress, offers a fascinating glimpse into British and Irish history. Guided tours are highly recommended as they bring the rooms to life with stories of the people who have lived and visited here, from royal family members (including Queen Elizabeth II) to prominent politicians like Benjamin Franklin and those involved in the Good Friday Agreement. Elegant Interiors: Explore beautifully restored State Rooms such as the Throne Room (where Queen Elizabeth II hosted a coronation ball), the State Drawing Room with its Irish art collection, Lady Grey's Study, and the State Dining Room. You'll see historical photographs and even political cartoons that add context to the events that unfolded within these walls. The Gardens: The 100 acres of gardens are a highlight, offering a variety of experiences. You'll find formal ornamental grounds, peaceful woodlands, meandering waterways, and picturesque glens. Walled Garden: This 4-acre historic horticultural space is a must-see. It's been expertly restored to produce fruit, vegetables, and flowers for the castle café. Look out for the espaliered fruit trees, some over 50 years old. It's particularly vibrant in summer with herbaceous borders in full bloom. Lady Alice's Temple: A beautiful 19th-century temple offering serene views of the surrounding gardens and lake. A perfect spot for quiet reflection. Yew Tree Walk & Moss Walk: Enjoy strolls along these distinctive paths. The Yew Tree Walk is named for the symmetrical yew trees, while the Moss Walk features a soft carpet of moss beneath lime trees. The Lake: Explore this secluded area with its stream-fed lake, home to wildlife like kingfishers and swans. A hydro-electric turbine powered by the Mill Race also generates power for the estate. The Imaginary Menagerie: This interactive play trail within the gardens is a fantastic addition for families, encouraging children to explore and discover hidden "hunny" pots and animal-inspired sculptures. Seasonal Displays: The gardens are designed to offer something beautiful throughout the year, with different floral displays depending on the season. Weston Pavilion Café: Enjoy delicious food and drink, often utilizing local produce and seasonal ingredients from the Walled Garden. Afternoon tea is also available. Accessibility: The site is generally accessible, with lifts to the entrance, level access throughout the house, and well-maintained garden paths. Wheelchairs are available to borrow. Parking: There is a designated free car park at the far end of the estate, conveniently located off the A1. Allow about 45 minutes to walk through the grounds if you've booked a castle tour. Dogs: Only trained assistance dogs are permitted in the gardens and café.

An afternoon out that exceeded our expectations. right from the get go the thoughtfully laid out and landscaped car park leading to a beautiful entrance area really impressed.. upon entering the initial building (which is open to the public) you are greeted by a very attractive well appointed café with lovely outdoor and indoor seating, attentive staff, quality food and coffee, made having lunch here a real treat all on its own! Of course bringing food with you is an option, but allowing some time and some spends for the café would be my recommendation.. The ticket desk and gift shop themselves where a continuation of this impressive high quality environment with friendly staff eager to assist and advise you of things to do and price options for the house tour and Gardens etc, I would say prices relative to other paid attractions of this type are not to offensive at all, considering that this truly does feel like you are getting to spend time in a sprawling private royal oasis.. Perhaps abit of a strange one but I do not feel like I would be doing this review justice if I didn't mention the toilet/bathroom facilities, they are well placed, everywhere you would need them, and they made me feel self conscious about my own bathroom at home! so posh, clean, comfortable, you almost feel fortunate when you need to use them haha, Sorry I was just so impressed with everything about my day here.. Now for a couple of not so amazing points to round things out. The gift shop is exceptionally expensive: Perhaps I am coming at this from the perspective of somebody who is not particularly well off, that being said I don't usually struggle to pick up a treat from a gift shop, but on this occasion I had to go home empty handed, of course you can get bits of chocolate and other cheaper nik-naks etc but I imagine any items of use or ornament will sit there utterly dependant upon care free retirees or Americans paying a visit, perhaps even prince Charlie himself!.. Lastly is the lack of a more comprehensive play area for smaller children: look I get it, slapping a big adventure playground in the middle of the place could completely ruin the vibe, and their is an excellent playground in the forest Park across the way. but plenty will come bringing bored boisterous young children, and once a commitment has been made via ticket purchasing to stick purely to a day in the grounds a well placed proper play area at a safe distance from everything else would be a more than useful addition. And that about wraps things up apart from my absolute final suggestion: If you are even thinking about a visit, please do and make it soon, it is much more impressive and has more to offer than you perhaps imagine.
