A fantastic little museum, check the website to see when it's running on steam otherwise it's open as a static display. When running, the engine is smooth and quiet, look out for the £1 coin balanced on the beam. There are 3 levels to explore and you can see it all nice and close. It's run by enthusiastic volunteers who are happy to share information on it. There is a guide book available. It's free but donations are welcome to keep it running. There is a blacksmith shop selling a few items and a cafe at the entrance. Parking available onsite. There are a few steps to get up to the top of the engine and a few at the entrance.

Went to Ryhope museum on an off chance one sunday.came across a few of the volunteers that work there.Absoulte brilliant people.Had loads of time for us even though the engines were not in steam.Took us around the full building and had loads of time for us.They say to get the full experience we need to go back when the engines are in steam and running.Every bank holiday weekends the engines are running so going to go back and see them in action.5 stars to the volunteers that work there

Ryhope Engines Museum is a must-visit destination. Visitors are treated to an exceptional combination of Victorian architecture and engineering. I recommend visiting on a 'steaming day' to see the mighty pumps in operation - check the museum website for opening info. The museum is operated and maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers who do an outstanding job. There is free parking available, along with a tea room and comfort facilities. All this, and it's free!

The Ryhope Enignes museum houses two working pumping engines that were built halfway in the 19th century and operated for about 100 years, before the facility closed in 1967. Since then voluteers have kept the engines in working order and maintained the stunning building and surrounding grounds. The two beam engines are massive and seeing them in motion is impressive, especially as visitors are able to get close to every working piece, from boilers to beams to flywheels. The engines are run only for about 14 days per year, including bank holidays, so make sure you check the website before you visit. During steaming days, the friendly and approachable volunteers are on hand to answer questions. There is also lovely decorated tea room on...

Very nice place this pumping station is it may only be open and running it's engines on a Bank holiday weekend and may not be a big place but if you like steam engines and finding out how they work there is no better place than Ryhope Pumping Station Museum it is surprising that this engine is pretty quiet for something that is well over 100 years old the grounds are kept manicured lawns big old trees really is a nice quiet place to visit the grounds are quite big as there is an underground reservoir which you can hear the water flowing fast underneath your feet you need to visit to find out for yourselves as to what it is like it is an experience that you can only...

What a great place. Well kept and maintained water pumping station powered by steam. As visitors you get to see the full process. In the blacksmiths you can buy steel items made there, and even watch while your order is created. Very good food at a nice price from the gate café. Toilets were very clean. Disabled access to all of the areas that I visited. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff and volunteers. Nothing is too much trouble for them, typical of us here in the North East. I would definitely revisit. Check their opening times before attending. Great place we loved it, ages 1 to 57. Free entry but donated into one of the...
