A fascinating addition to the Warkworth Castle experience. It is (at time of writing) only open Sundays and Mondays.

The ferryman was very polite and had already departed a couple of minutes earlier than scheduled, so kindly came back for me when I arrived in the nick of time. Thus I got a private crossing!

I rather suspect this is Britain's most obscure transport service, actually.

Once we were all assembled on the far shore, we had a 10min tour before being left for a few more minutes to explore by ourselves. There are a few hidden things which you will learn about, and it didn't feel rushed despite the short amount of time.

As others have said, it could become expensive on its own. Don't forget English Heritage membership can be quite good value in this part of the country, and sometimes you can get it half price with deals with popular supermarket...

Important to check opening hours. Usually only open in the summer and even then only for two days a week. Best to park at Warkworth Castle car park and walk down to the river and then follow the river path for almost half a mile. The river walk is fine but since you need to cross the river in a rowing boat this is not suitable for the infirm or anybody with physical disabilities. A fascinating rock-carved building awaits you on the other side but it is tiny and the entry prices are too high. Fine if you are members of English Heritage since it...

Skipped the Castle and went straight to this hermitage. You have to pick your times as the river is tidal and you need to get the Engliah Heritage boat across. Hewn out of bare rock some 1000 years ago it is both tranquile and eerie; love the flood levels carced into the rock going back hundreds of years. Nice walk back along the river to the town.

It was a lovely walk down from the castle and a tranquil place to visit. Not really suitable for people with major mobility issues due to the steep hill, kissing gate and large steps into and out of the boat. You need to book your tickets and time slot at the main castle site. 3 generations enjoyed the visit.
