Friendly staff, beautiful place. The gardens are lovely. They are separated into sections, floral garden with a river running in front of it, and vegetables/working garden. The path in the garden can be small and narrow. Plenty of warnings signposted about uneven steps. It's great with children, as they feel as if they are in a maze. A few seats for peaceful picnics or read a book there. The garden itself isn't vast, you would probably spend a few minutes going through all the sections of the garden. However, you can tell that whoever looked after the plants really know what they are doing. The flowers thrive, plenty different bulbs that I've never seen before. The vegetable garden looks as if it would yield good produce. Such peaceful place. Tranquil and good to rest the mind. This is just the garden. The house has thatched roofing, looks great from outside. They also have a shop selling nice national trust quality goods. Visiting the the shop is free and you could get a glimpse of the garden on the way to the shops.

A charming historic house in a peaceful setting in the South Downs. The house is particularly significant as it was the first building acquired and restored by the National Trust. The guides were very knowledgeable and gave an excellent presentation on the house and gardens. Look out for the carved oak leaf in the north east corner of the hall, an original feature from the 15th century. The gardens are dog friendly (though not the house), and the site is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10:30 to 16:30 between April and October. There's no on-site parking, but there are two public parking lots a short walk from the house. While visiting, the church and village of Alfriston are well worth a look.

Well we went to visit the clergy house but unfortunately NT had neglected to tell anyone ( there were many other disappointed people ) it was closed that day. However, that said, the village of Alfriston is a picture postcard little village with some lovely walks a beautiful village green and a small centre with interesting shops. TIP for parking: The first carpark you come to is a pay and display on the left, however venture 100 yards down the road and on the right is a FREE car park for 2 hours which is plenty of time to explore. Enjoy your visit and hopefully have more luck with the clergy house than me.

We visited Alfriston Clergy House today and I didn't know anything about it before visiting. I must say that I was actually.blown away by it. We had a guided tour of the orchard by one of the volunteers, that was really informative. Then we had a look around the house itself. It's small but well looked after. After walking around the house we sampled some of the freshly picked apples. They were absolutely divine. Then a quick walk around the vegetable garden. Before we left we bought some more apples a bought a selection of second-hand books that were really good value. Thoroughly recommended and would be nice to see the gardens again in...
