After a long walk from Willingdon, we stumbled upon The Singing Kettle, a quaint and welcoming café in the heart of Alfriston. From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted with a huge smile from the owner, setting the tone for what turned out to be a truly wonderful experience.
Despite the café being packed, she found us a small table to wait at, with the promise of moving us to a larger table by the window as soon as it became free—a small but thoughtful touch that instantly made us feel valued. Drinks arrived quickly and were lovely, and when we did move to the bigger table, the owner took the time to chat with us, ask about our walk, and take a genuine interest in who we were. It was a level of hospitality that feels increasingly rare these days.
When it came to ordering, I asked for a slight tweak to my dish, and it was taken in stride with zero fuss or hesitation. The food itself was outstanding—I went for the bubble and squeak with sausages instead of bacon (because let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good sausage?), while the others had the soup, which was equally well received. Every bite was delicious, fresh, and clearly made with care.
If I had to find a downside, the prices were on the higher side, but that’s likely more a reflection of the current economy than anything specific to this café. And honestly, given the quality of food and the warmth of the experience, it felt well worth it.
Would I go again? 100%! I’d recommend The Singing Kettle to anyone and everyone—whether you're stopping off mid-walk or just looking for a great meal with even better...
Read moreWe went for a pre birthday breakfast and I Ordered the veggie breakfast. It was really awful. The plate was covered in half a bottle of Thai chilli sauce. It was all around the plate like the bottle had been spilt. There was one thick slice of bread which a big ball Of damp wilted spinach on top. On top of that was a poached egg where the white of the egg was runny and uncooked. Two slaps of halloumi too and some smashed avocado. The combination made feel sick and at £11. It was an absolute miss. I still don’t understand why you would pour sweet chilli all over the plate. Why you would not ask a customer what sauce they wanted with it. Or even why you would not serve the sauce separately. I love poached eggs but this one was barely cooked. I felt sick after we left and it will be one of those brunch choices that will haunt me forever. The staff were lovely and the venue...
