within the family-friendly Pleasure Gardens at Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, the Marlborough Hedge Maze is one of the most captivating outdoor attractions in Oxfordshire. Spanning over half an acre and featuring more than two miles of winding, clipped yew hedges, this living labyrinth is as much a tribute to history as it is a delight for visitors of all ages.
Created in 1991, the maze pays homage to the 1st Duke of Marlborough's military triumphs, with its design cleverly incorporating elements such as cannonballs, trumpets, and flags. These subtle flourishes elevate the experience from a simple maze to a symbolic journey—ideal for those who enjoy a bit of storytelling with their puzzles.
One of the maze’s highlights is the series of raised wooden bridges, offering a helpful (and scenic) vantage point for those feeling a bit lost in the greenery. Whether you conquer it quickly or get gleefully turned around, the Marlborough Maze delivers just the right amount of challenge.
But it’s not just the maze that makes this spot special. It's part of a larger family destination that includes a miniature train, an adventure playground, and even a butterfly house—making it a perfect day out for children and adults alike. The setting, within the grounds of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, only adds to the magic.
Whether you’re a history buff, puzzle lover, or simply looking for a bit of wholesome outdoor fun, the Marlborough Hedge Maze is a charming and memorable part of any visit to...
Read moreWhat an awesome maze! So well thought out and take fun to do. It's about two miles to walk around, with lots of twists, turns and dead ends.
It's within Blenheim Palace grounds so you'll need to pay for parking (£12), the lady at the ticket booth did say that a car parking membership might work out cheaper if planning repeat visits, but we're not from the area so it's unlikely we'll visit enough to make it value for money. It's also worth noting that we were directed over to the carparking on the right of the ticket booth, which meant we had a good 15 minute walk along the exit road just to get to the maze. There is a bit of parking down by the maze so either try to head for that, or there is a miniature train that runs from the house to the gardens/maze which is £1 each...
