St Catherine’s Hill is a hidden gem just outside the historic city of Winchester, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and peaceful seclusion. For locals and visitors alike, it’s an ideal destination for a short walk, panoramic views, and a connection with England’s deep-rooted past.

One of the hill’s main draws is its breathtaking view over the Itchen Valley and Winchester itself. After a moderately steep climb (especially if you take the stair path from the water meadows), you're rewarded with sweeping, unspoiled countryside stretching in all directions. On clear days, the view is truly spectacular — a photographer’s dream.

The chalk grassland is rich in wildflowers and butterflies during spring and summer, making it a haven for nature lovers. The hill is also a favorite among dog walkers and runners, yet it rarely feels crowded, offering a sense of...

Great option for a sunny weekend with the family and children or to stretch your legs. Offers great views across the Itchen Navigation and Winchester. Steep Iron Age, Roman and Medieval history, not to mention a SSSI for its rich herb flora and population of butterflies. Anyone who says the steps are "hard going"... wow, it's not a mountain. Any fitness level can do it. The incline is gentle. And there's plenty of room for people to overtake. The steps are very wide, deep and are slip-proof. Unfortunately there's the background noise of the M3, which spoils the tranquility of the downland, and you can peer into the cutting as you stand on the south border of the site. Nice footpath loop from Hazeley across the Golf Course to the hill via the footbridge, across and down by the canal along the towpath, under the bridge on the B3335 towards Twyford and back to...

A great spot for views looking over Winchester.

There's 300 odd steps to the top - my son counted so that's why I'm privy to that information!!!

There's a stand of trees right at the top where kids will find a swing someone has put up. A small mound in the centre is a sure sign you've climbed to the very top. A great photo spot!

There's also a "maze" that's been etched in the ground that small and big children alike will enjoy following.

You can also walk down into the valley and up the other side where you can get a good vantage point over looking the M3 motorway.

Keep on walking around and you'll come across a bench that looks back across to St Catherine's Hill.... A very quiet and relaxing spot with very few people.

If you come at the right time you'll be lucky enough to nab a spot at the small but free Garnier...

There is a labyrinth on the NE side (about 60 degrees NE) side of The Clump. The starting point is very close to the clump (see photo). This is the largest labyrinth I have come across in the U.K. Even bigger than the one in Glastonbury (and has less crazy people). It’s is such a pleasant surprise to discover a labyrinth here. Walking a labyrinth is believed to have a meditative effect. A labyrinth is different from a maze in that there is only one way in, and once you reach the centre point of the labyrinth, you turn around and walk back on the same path. Because your brain is not trying to solve problems when you’re walking a labyrinth, and it’s not in a fight or flight mode (not trying to get out of the maze), you can relax, and pay attention to how you feel and how your foot steps land on the ground. Have fun!!
