Very interesting hike. Its the shortest route to see the MASH film location. Go when its cooler or cloudy as there is very little shade. Almost no people during the week. Lots of small critters like lizards and quail. Saw a doe and her two fawns. Bring some good boots as you will tread through rocky parts and also some sandy parts. Most of the MASH site was burned in a fire long ago, but there remains a few items to look at. Good for a photo-op. What I LOVE about this trail is the landscape and the scenery. Just take it in! I felt like I was in a different world. We did some extra walking to the Dam and also the heli-pad, and I clocked in about 5 miles in/out. Not bad. Got a good workout both ways. Read moreThis is an excellent place to start if you want to hike into Malibu Creek State Park! The Cistern Trail connects with the Lookout Trail that starts at the Reagan Ranch State Park. It is about 0.7 miles to get to the bottom near the dam, which is worth a visit. You can also hike to the rock pools and the Malibu Creek State Park Visitor center. If you go the other way, you will come across the site of the Planet of the Apes set and much further the MASH production site. These are both worth a visit!
