I grew up next to this park. My grandfather was the one who would put the flag up every morning and take it down every night (yes, there's a person who does that). Fun fact: where there's a table on a strange slab of concrete much bigger than a table would need? That's where a turret from a naval ship sat. Used to play on it as a kid. Before you ask no, it was NOT removed because a kid got his head stuck in the barrel.... It was in the wheel for the torpedoes. This is not to say that it was a safe thing for children to play on, it was rusting and the metal was falling apart. Doesn't mean it wasn't a blast to play with and how many kids can say they played with a real WWII naval ship weapon!? It is now at the shooting range. Before the official memorial and names were in place there was a bed of flowers set at an angle to be viewed by the cars. The pattern of the flowers were changed every season and there was a single, three tiered stone memorial to honor the fallen. The park has changed over the years. There was never a big homeless problem despite what the neighborhood believed the Walgreens would bring. The trees are the same from thirty five years ago. But apparently the neighborhood didn't like the SCA practicing so they were given the boot (boo!) This is where I made my first friend, learned to ride my bike, and a million other childhood memories. There should be more parks like this one in the city, in my...
Read moreThis is a nice park to go and relax in, it has a nicely kept environment with plenty of trees and grass and it is located in a neighborhood where the people that live there show a lot of pride in how they keep the houses and yards. It is also located in a neighborhood watch area so it is a good place to walk, plan activities such as volleyball, picnics and other family oriented gatherings. Though the park does not provide the equipment it does have plenty enough room for several different types of outings that can give enough room so the parties won't be too close together. The main reason the park was established is to give tribute to the citizens that were part of the war effort and especially the ones who were taken captive and gave there lives for this country through their military service. Some of the other places near by include Walgreens and Jublition's Wine and Spirits, just to name a couple of places within...
