Very nice place for backcountry camping. We stayed at south point #4 and is by far the most private. This site is right on thunder bay and overlooks a couple of islands. At night you can see the lights of Alpena in the distance. The beach is rocky, but there is a relatively sandy area to swim in. I'd bring water shoes. The campsite itself is a cleared sandy area nestled in trees. The picnic table, fire pit with grate and pit toilet made this a comfortable site. The walk back to the site was an easy 2.2 miles with our packs. Bringing a wagon could be an option to this site, but would be easier to sites #1-3. The path gets rockier out by site #4, but is pretty smooth to sites #1-3. Site #4 faces north, so things got kinda choppy and we weren't protected from the winds blowing from the north. The other sites have a more traditional beach feel and are less windy, as wind rarely comes from the east. However these are more closely spaced together. You really can't go wrong with any site. While there, hike the Chippewa trail. There is the most beautiful birch forest on that route that can't be missed. All trails are relatively flat. There are areas of muck so wear sturdy shoes and bring...
Read moreFor our first backpacking trip, hike was perfect. The hike in/out was quiet and beautiful. Of course there were bugs, but with the proper repellent, we sustained minimal mosquito bites. The hike took just under an hour, with some occasional stops to soak in the beauty.
Our site was South Point #4, which was very secluded. The site receives a lot of wind, as you may see in other reviews, however it helped greatly with bugs/mosquitos. The wind prevented most insects from being able to fly, so we had virtually no issue with bugs/mosquitos at the actual site. If we adventured from the site, that was a different story. Repellent is highly recommended.
Some additional positive points. The fire pit has a rock wall built to help block wind and help start a fire. A bear box is included about 100 ft from the actual site, along with a vaulted toilet. I know you can't ask for much, but the toilet was def a single star. lol
Overall, this trip was Perfect......
Read moreThis place is a true Michigan gem. It's lovingly cared for, wild, and scenic. Great swimming in many areas. The back country campsites are spectacular. They are primitive and remote.... Expect to carry in or filter water from the lake, use a vault privie with no roof, and either hang your food from a bear pole or use a bear box (both are provided) . Be prepared to cut (down and dead) firewood if you're camping.... Bring a saw. I had to hike a bit from my campsite to find anything to cut. So you'll probably need to cut and carry firewood from some distance.
The trail in is easy .... Flat, well used and marked, with bridges over mucky areas, and a few benches. The public beach is lovely, there's good rock hunting up toward the point if you're into hiking to other parts of the shoreline. Great trail system. The drive in on the two track sand trail road is ok most of the time but I would imagine you need 4 wheel drive occasionally. ...
