The Ptarmigan Ridge Trail is one of the most stunning hikes in the Mount Baker area—vast ridgelines, close-up views of Mount Baker’s glaciers, and endless alpine scenery that feels almost otherworldly. The trail was lined with wild blueberries, making it just as much a treat for foragers as for photographers.
The hike is about 9 miles round trip with ~1,500 feet of elevation gain, though you can shorten it by turning around earlier at one of the scenic ridges. Read moreAlthough this place is busy, it's such a surreal hike. The views are spectacular and the trail has so much variation in scenery. I went on a mid September Saturday. There isn't much tree cover and conditions are chilly, so bring layers and a toque or hat. Sunglasses are also a must. Not too many bugs here, but sunscreen and moisturizer for the skin and lips help because of the wind and cold breeze. Good hiking boots and hiking poles are also highly recommended because a lot of the trail is rubble and full of ankle rollers. It took us 6 hours in total, including a lot of photo breaks and a lunch, so lots of snacks, food and water will get you through this long but phenomenal hike. Lots of people are camping here, which is how I'll most likely enjoy this place next! Overnight parking has to be purchased in advance, along with a proof of purchase tag for vehicles parked long-term. I'm not sure how...
