My original post is below. So after little bit of time I received a reply from Discount Electronics. The response is below. As you can see it is rude and condescending just like the person was in the store I went to. The laptop I was referring to in the original review Was a Dell Latitude E6330. If you look at their website with Windows 10 Pro, 16 GB RAM and a 1 TB GB hard drive it is over $497.00 plus tax, more than twice as much in a lot of other places The other item was a usb to HDMI adapter that they wanted $72 plus tax for while on Amazon you can get similar if not better quality converters for anywhere from $19 to $50. So how is anything they are selling a discount? I guess it is very subjective on their part but no one else would think that. Due to their rude response I will never go there again under any circumstances and I would advice other people not to as well. Their prices are horrible and there customer service bad.The biggest thing is that you can buy elsewhere for better prices! I also dropped them from two stars to one from my initial review. After their response they deserve a zero! I am sure that I will get yet another rude reply from them! Original Post: So, I guess putting discount on front of your name must do something because this place seems to do really well with pretty high prices. Over the past week I have priced things over there twice and their prices were exorbitant. One was a laptop, used over at this place it was almost $500.00 with tax. I found the exact same thing online for $200. The second was a usb adapter that they wanted over $70.00 for that the same type of thing was on Amazon for under $20.00. And when I walked in there to talk to someone about one of the units one of the sales people was very nice but he had to ask another associate for help and that person was very condescending to me. Discount is very convenient to where I live but unless it is some type of emergency I will not be...
Read moreAs indicated by its name, Discount Electronics sells merchandise at substantially lower prices than other stores, but that's not the main reason that I gave it a five-star rating. When my old computer died and I took it to Discount Electronics on West Anderson, I was greeted at the front desk by Assistant Manager Brandon Hooper. I explained that I needed a replacement computer, but more importantly, I wanted a way to preserve the files on my old computer's hard drive. Brandon offered me a way to accomplish both of those goals, by offering to sell me a refurbished computer, remove the hard drive from my old computer, and install it in the new one. After I selected a Dell computer from their inventory, Brandon worked for almost an hour performing that installation and testing to make sure that the new computer can read my old hard drive. Then he gave me a monitor cord at no charge, plus 50% off the cost of an external DVD player, and he charged me NOTHING for his labor installing my old computer's hard drive into my new computer. Now I have a newly-refurbished computer with not one but TWO hard drives, preserving all my old files at no additional cost. Although there are other places in Austin to buy electronics at discounted prices, I wouldn't get service like that from a thrift shop. That is the reason for my five-star rating.
3/13/2025 update: My computer wouldn't restart, so I took it to Discount Electronics, where Tim Garza diagnosed the problem, replaced a battery, corrected a problem with the startup settings, and resolved the issue within half an hour. He didn't charge me anything for his labor, or for the replacement battery. That's one more reason for my five-star-rating.
6/25/2025 update: Eve and Tim helped me again with a problem that the Windows troubleshooter couldn't diagnose. They showed me how to address the problem myself if it happens again, and didn't charge me for their service. ...
Read moreThis review is intended for Discount Electronics - North Austin on W Parmer Lane: Look over the used computer you buy from them for additional defects not listed on the website description, and know that they can, in fact, give you a full refund if there are defects that were not listed on the website, even though they may try to tell you store credit only. The computer I purchased had additional defects not listed on the website description and that were not pointed out to me during pickup. The failure to point out the additional defects could have been an honest mistake since my pickup process was rushed on my end. However, I did not appreciate that during my return of the computer the next day, the same individual tried to tell me that they only offered store credit. I politely stated that I'd be requiring a full refund, and the guy agreed to the refund, then admitted to noticing the defects prior to my pickup. All in all, they made it right, but I didn't appreciate the "store credit only" line given that the mistake was on their end. Big deal on a $2000 purchase.
There was a computer available on their website with a bent chassis that the rep on the phone said he honestly wouldn't touch. I appreciated his honesty and wonder why they would list something for sale that could fail with one more accidental drop.
Discount Electronics' prices are too high based on comparing their pricing with new computers directly through Dell. For both a Dell Inspiron and XPS, I found new computers through Dell's deals page that were at the same price as Discount Electronics with chips that were 2 generations newer and other specs that were the same.
I've only had one experience with them; so this review is limited to a single experience. Couple people I know have had great experiences with Discount Electronics. Discount Electronics was excellent in helping me select a computer and took the time to answer all of...
