The park is lovely!! If the park was located outside of the city or perhaps if it were 1980, the rating would've been a 5. Don't get a false sense of security when visiting, golfing or playing in this park. It's front faces a more genteel part of the city, while the rear faces one of the sketchier streets, Erdman Avenue. The only caveat to the pleasant environment may be the prospect of foot traffic that enters and exits the park. Do not let your guard down, be vigilant and you'll be fine. It's safe enough to have a great time, just be street smart. Street smart means: Say no to anyone asking for money if approached. Don't be arrogant, or a pushover; be respectful of all persons. If you feel you are in danger, throw your wallet and then run, don't just "hand" it over and for God's sake, don't fight unless it's for your life or family -- not your money, wallet, purse or your car - that's why we have law enforcement. Don't carry anything of value or extra money so you don't catch yourself trying to save something you can replace, which is EVERYTHING...
Read moreI live on this park. It's literally my neighbor's across the street. And I love this park. It's a wonderful place for families, friendships, and any type of gathering. The whole park isn't like that so you might want to scope out the playgrounds before you actually come if that is what you're looking for. But the rest of Herring Run Park has great trails, perfect for walking, running or biking, and lots of wildlife to look at. During various times of the year, you'll see of plethora of creatures. Lately you'll find more foxes and deer than anything. But it is worth the trip. And it's great for her to picnics and...
Read moreThere are lots of ways to get some fresh air and exercise here. Trails through the woods are my favorite part, and there are many fields for team sports. The loop around Lake Montebello is safe for bikes and walking (with some exercise stations along the way) and everyone is polite. Sometimes the City needs to pay better attention to keep trails clean and the paved bike path repaired though. New construction projects are underway, but a section at the southern trails has been washed out for years. I suppose it is hard to keep up with such a broad system of trails crossing much...
