Update: Eastbound access to the park remains open during the 8 month closure of golf club road. Westbound is inaccessible by car, but ou can walk to the red town entrance to cinder mine trail. It is a fairly steep hike going down to the main trail from the trailhead parking lot, until you reach the easy main trail that runs through most of the park. The trail runs through what remains of a large turn of the century coal mining operation. In the trail you can view an exposed coal seam, the top of what was a 1000 foot deep ventilation shaft. If you have the time and energy, the hike from the YMCA parking lot to the red town trailhead is recommended.

For an easy plus (or a moderate minus) hike, it’s very solid for a city suburb hike. My elderly mother can do this hike with a cane. We went in the afternoon after a morning rain so the trail was pretty muddy. Parking must be hard if it is busy but the whole trail ends from Coal Creek trail head to Red Town Trailhead. There are a few loops so you can get “lost” for 10-15 minutes but it’s literally a straight line. Overall, easy-ish for anyone in shape. Cool trail. Nice—not amazing but simple. Enjoy a city hike—even the traffic noise was negligible.

We are lucky to have this beautiful and historical trail in the city. Various trails are available in the park for all levels. Love this place.
