I took some students to the Stars and Planets show this past weekend. Very neat technology in the show. It was a powerful platform for movement, detail, and perspective in the solar system. I was also impressed that, during the Q&A, the navigators controlling the visual show could immediately pull up animations related to the questions being asked. Added neat value.
The narration left a lot to be desired, however. A university student presented ad lib, and although it was pretty clear she knew a fair amount about astronomy and was very friendly, the style was unpolished and not well-suited to the show. It was at times tentative, low-volume, with regular empty space, and not content-heavy. (I think you can still be kid-friendly and content-heavy.) For example, while presenting the planet Venus, a couple of photographs of the surface (?) of Venus were put up, and the narrator said that these were some of the only photographs on record of Venus since cameras entering its hot atmosphere burn up so quickly. This made me interested, especially as the photos seemed to have a lot going on in them. However, the only comment the narrator made about the photos was that it looked like there was some "rocky business going on" (referring, I think, to some objects that looked like rocks). This was just one example of the general feel: a well-organized technical / visual presentation with subpar narration.
Presentations like this must have either scripted narration (which can totally still be engaging) or else very well-rehearsed commentary. Otherwise, the organizers' desire for a friendly, engaging presentation (a good desire) falls flat. This one was tough to listen to, and a little...
Read morePre-paid to go see a Laser Light Daft Punk Show. The staff kept collecting money until after all tickets were sold and everybody was in line. They then decided to be honest and tell everyone the show was cancelled due to sound and screen issues and that they had known about this all day. They did not refund any money for tickets or offer to do so, and since we had taken a group of people with us and just bought a bunch of tickets along with our groupon tickets we were left wondering why the hell they didn't warn us about this obvious equipment failure before everyone gave them their money. This is called a scam when you do this so someone. There were no discounts off a future show if we wanted to substitute our concert for the evening with a vocal and unplanned star tour that they were trying to cash in on.
The whole time during the show (which we went to because this was my only night in Boulder and I would have had to throw away my tickets otherwise) they kept bragging about how state-of-the art the new projector is and how it's possibly the most advanced planetarium in the world, but I could not find any info about this anywhere outside of the guy in the planetarium telling us this, if it can be confirmed, that would be nice.
Overall, great planetarium as far as they go, I think all planetariums are pretty awesome. Hopefully you go without being scammed, and see the show you want. I was really upset about how much they didn't care about their customers or respecting them properly as people and not as...
Read moreThis was my first time coming here for a science show and a laser light show.
I liked the science show however I was having a hard time understanding what was being said due to being hard of hearing. I wish there was close captions or something to help with that.
Being a HUGE Harry Styles fan that I am, I knew I had to come see this show and I'm so glad I did. It was well worth two hour drive home.
Only downside is I had a group of adults sitting next to me when there was plenty of spots for them to sit, and for the first four songs they talked, mocked, laughed, and made fun of me so I finally had to get up and move away from them. I wish there was someone around watching people so they could've kicked these people out but thankfully after I moved away they finally left few seconds later knowing they couldn't make fun of me anymore.
Overall, I had a blast, and sang every song! I highly...
