The Vicksburg Historic Village is tons of fun for the whole family! In the 1970s, the Union Depot was planned for demolition, but thanks to the Vicksburg Historical Society the Depot was saved, refurbished, and now houses a local museum. The village was then placed around it, with some newly built buildings, and a lot of repurposed ones. Among those that were repurposed are the Strong School, a one-room schoolhouse from the Mendon vicinity, the 1910 Brady Township Hall, Sunset Acres Farmhouse and Barn, and the locomotive boxcars and caboose. The village also offers a newspaper printshop, a general store, a pavilion and gazebo, a cemetery, a sweet shop, and a village garage and blacksmith.
An amazing piece of history located here is the grindstone to the old Vicker's mill, the very mill that started the city of Vicksburg! These tablets give a modern touch, yet do not take away from the history, but rather add to it and the learning experience as a whole.
Also, watch for events that the village throws, specifically Harvest Fest in late September. During these events the village literally comes alive with vendors, petting zoos, competitions, ice cream, hay rides, and old-fashioned demonstrations. Surprisingly, the village had a ton to offer, yet remains small enough to retain that local touch that can only be found in close-knit communities. Absolutely, a...
Read more(NOTE: See website for hours.) The Vicksburg Historic Village and Depot Museum is a great local attraction. Situated between a busy railroad line and the main north-south road into town, the sprawling mock village hosts a wide variety of historical structures, artifacts, and seasonal events. Kids will love running around the grounds and climbing in the vintage rail cars: a boxcar containing displays on railroad history, and a restored caboose. The other buildings are themed based on local history - a service station / blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, town hall, general store, print shop (with working antique printing equipment) and farmhouse/barn. All contain interesting artifacts and local stories. A great place for families to visit on a Saturday afternoon. Vicksburg Farmer's Market / Pavilion and trailhead for a paved linear park are...
