There used to be a railroad line that ran from Sebastopol to Santa Rosa. Parts of the paved Joe Rodota trail follow the the same route as this piece of history. Behind the Gravenstein Station Market Place, a trail takes you past the Elderberry Commons to the part of the Joe Rodota trail that is my starting point. Going left towards Santa Rosa, my walk generally takes me about a mile into the trail before I turn back. The trail will take you all the way to Santa Rosa.Trees line the route as well as agricultural ranches. It is very low impact with a very calming atmosphere. Bicycles are very popular for people of all ages. It's also a great place to walk your dog. I see a lot of people from more mature generations enjoying this trail. The spring offers bursts of color from wildflowers. I have observed catapillars dropping from the trees here once in a magnificent display of nature. Off and on homeless encampments have been an issue on the Santa Rosa end of the trail, but this part of the trail has retained its natural beauty and is safe and ready...
Read moreLots of unhoused people on this trail, unfortunately, making it feel unsafe for this solo female runner. The worst areas are as you come closer to Santa Rosa and on the bridge where the Joe Rodota trail connects to the Santa Rosa Creek trail. On a single 7am run, I saw three police cars, one arrest in progress, a separate police report being taken, people graffitiing the path, pot smoking, presumably other drug use, drinking, dancing to amplified music, and easily a dozen or more people packing up their overnight tents. The trail itself is nice in many places, although again for safety reasons I wasnât fond of the fencing on either side in the Santa Rosa areasâno means of escape if something were to happen. The best areas and safest were the 2-3 miles closest to the Sebastopol trailhead. I would not advise runners use this trail, nor would I say itâs good for women...
Read moreGreat place to catch HIV, keep an eye on your dog's on account I've found 2 bags of drugs on the ground in less then a week. Good place to pay attention to your surroundings. If you own a gun I'd advise bringing it when walking this path. If you like dirty needles this is the place for you! Maybe you would like a tutorial on how to smoke meth, this place provides people with an educational experience of watching people fussing around and finding out. Keep in mind for every homeless person is 80k a year in tax payers money on clean up of emcampments. Count the homeless people and...
