We have dined here for lunch and dinner several times now and not once have we been disappointed. Today’s visit was no different, as everything was so fresh and delicious. This visit, we ordered the chilled spinach and Japanese eggplant as starters. Both were excellent and I loved the sweet miso glaze and walnut combination with the fire roasted eggplant. For our mains, we ordered the chili tofu donburi and the Cali poke donburi. I can’t stop thinking about the sweet glaze on the citrus tofu and vegetables and my husband loved the Cali poke. We are definitely already planning our next visit. Also, if you’re a fan or ribs, order the 15 spice spare ribs. You can thank me later.

The restaurant industry in general, but especially those who operate restaurants in the Barlow, have weathered many literal and metaphorical storms in the past few years. From floods to a global pandemic, I just want to commend small business owners like those at Sushi Kosho, for their ceaseless pursuit of excellence and service. I have so much respect for Chef Jake Rand and the unique and delectable dishes he’s creating at Kosho and now Oyster. Reading over some of the negative reviews on here just makes me feel like these people may have unrealistic expectations of service or they have clearly never worked in the service or restaurant industry. One thing I can say for sure is that if you do not dine here, you will be...

This is some of the best sushi we have had in Northern California. It was very surprising because we did not expect such good sushi to be here in Sevastopol. The location of the restaurant is a little small so we had a little wait but it’s in an awesome outdoor mixed market and shopping area called the Barlow and we easily killed some time walking and sitting by the park next door. Two or three fun looking bars in the vicinity.

The food was excellently prepared with high quality ingredients. This is not a $150 omakase type of experience, but for its class of family style accessible Japanese places, the food is more than solid, it’s exquisite and at a reasonable price compared to similar places all throughout the Bay Area.

The standout was the 15 spices ribs appetizer. Perfectly prepared, seared outside and tender outside, impressed our international table. The sushi is also made with great fish. This time I didn’t try any special toro but the quality of the fish makes me think there is a secretly overtalented chef in the back taking it one step at a time to deliver what’s needed for a family commumity. This is awesome and not a crazy price at about $40 per person including tip and tax for five people for a fantastic dinner.

Easy parking here lots of free parking at the Barlow. Try to make a reservation ahead of...

I'm only giving this rating because of Vincent, one of the chefs. His care with the food and presentation elevated the meal to experience from decent meal. The size of the sushi pieces were as big a silver dollars and showed off every ingredient. I wish I had taken pictures to show what I mean when I say it was amazing! The flavor was mouth watering (even now). Fresh made yuzu sauce was beyond what I expected in a sushi place. The citrus had a kick that wasn't distracting from the mellow buttery flavor of the salmon. Vincent is an asset to the establishment. He answered all my questions with intelligence, humor, and wit; also honesty. What made the dining experience, odd, was one of the waitresses was staring hard at me. I couldn't understand her expression. I have a blank face most of the time myself so I won't judge but it made me feel like I was doing something she thought was odd. The evening service manager also stared a bit. Odd, but Vincent saved the day with his masterful meal. They would do well to treat him well and...

A friend recommended Kosho and I am disappointed. I always order chirashi from Japanese restaurants and this chirashi felt like a $40 bowl of fish scraps. Except for the salmon roe. The rice was not sushi rice, or if it was it must have been very lightly seasoned. In the attached pictures you can see how the fish cuts are falling apart, small and uneven. So much tuna and salmon, barely any of any whitefish. I was looking forward to mackerel sashimi as that isn't common in Chirashi, but I couldn't even enjoy it as it was mainly skin with tattered fish on it. Chirashi is a bowl of assorted sashimi, not randomly cut fish. My family got other dishes, the tofu donburi and a roll, both were fine. The cooked vegetables with the tofu mightve been the tastiest. Maybe just stick to nigiri if you want raw fish here. Service was overall good. But so disappointed by the fish when it costs more than other restaurants.

2nd visit and both times excellent—super fresh sashimi, great speciality roll, and matcha butter cake to die for! Didn’t care too much for the too spicy edamame (by itself) but brought it home and ate it with brown rice—delish. Friendly attentive service. Nice spacious interior and loved the outdoor fire pit patio. Will return! Update: 1/1/25 Husband (with many decades of sushi dining experience) and I have dined here many times since my last review 2 years ago. Consistently fresh and delicious food, attentive service (tonight by the chef/owner and team). Food came out quickly. Had fantastic eggplant and trumpet mushroom apps, salmon and crab roll and sushi special. Nice quiet vibe despite many people (but not full). New dessert: miso cheesecake with passion flower sauce—we almost licked the plate. Rich and Good to share. We come here the most frequently when we’re wanting sushi.
