If you want to hike or disc golf in a genuine swamp, subtropical environment and you’re not from around here, I definitely say you should check this place out! My only complaints are that after Hole 6 on the disc golf course it gets quite confusing. After Hole 7 the order is unintelligible and I decided to quit since I couldn’t find Hole 8 and ended up playing some unidentified hole. Also it was getting dark. Which brings me to the next point that the hours are very unclear as well. Signs say that it’s dawn to dusk, yet Google says it closes at 8 PM and people were still at the park with their cars at dusk. Still, I didn’t want to risk getting locked in there (it does say they lock the gates) since you have to call the cops to get out, though the police station is literally right next door so it probably wouldn’t take long… I wouldn’t risk a fine or something for bad hours and unclear labeling though. Even in December there seem to be gnats and mosquitos… but I certainly won’t complain about swamp conditions in a disc golf course called “Fire Swamp”! The course and area is honestly gorgeous, it’s just very oppressive humidity so you might want to bring bug spray and be prepared to get worn out even in winter months. Again, if you’re not from around here, Charleston is a 9a climate zone and so it’s even more subtropical than other areas of South Carolina or even Georgia for that matter… it’s a must-see if you like wetlands!

Nice park but some people here are stuck ups. My toddler had my camera on, aimlessly taking pictures of the floor and some nerdy looking dad came over to complain. I showed him no pictures of him where there but I told him I'd delete them all. Some ppl need to get off their high horse. Dude acting like he was Brad Pitt or something. It's a toddler playing and discovering. Here's a cute picture of him. My toddler, not the carrot that got mad.

There aren't many great parks in West Ashley. I really enjoy this one! There are tons of ball fields, hiking paths, picnic tables, restrooms, and even a fishing dock in the very back with a bridge that leads to an island. As a full time professional photographer, I occasionally have clients that don't want to fight the traffic to get downtown or out to the beach for a photo shoot. This park makes for a nice location for them.

This place has a section that not many people I have ever taken out will go. Team 4 sub station is right around the corner so mind your manners. the Gate closes at 6pm every night but the islands are D.N.R. so play at your own risk. I grew up on this land when it was all privately owned. That means if you want was one of the largest privately owned plots in the grater Charleston area I'm your Boy 700+ acers of knee deep in nasty. This part of charleston is or was home to several hard to find native animals. The park has pushed them out into the surrounding areas. Of Course alligators are on this list as well as alligator snapping turtles. At one point their was ,sighted by my father and myself an Eagle species was never verified. Nest was on behind 2150 Vespers Drive. This are is now home to houses built on marsh lands of the 700+ acres of native swamp land. If you are really board go look by the third to the last bend by the softball fields. if you make it 1.3 Miles out you will find a Claimed to be old Indian Burial ground. The property was owned By the Lacie Family. The Myatt family was a huge part of the activist group that fought to preserve what little was left of West Ashley in its original state. Sad to say the state won and the biggest plot of local inner city land disappeared. Home to Eagel(s) unverified. Of Course this is why our group fought to keep the plot in its natural state. One will never know if that beautiful Eagle was our most iconic animal. If you want to see what it used to look like then you need to now go to the plantations off Highway 61 #myattsmonsters. On a positive note This place or what is left of it is what life is all about. You have a rear catch here a fresh water flounder found by the frisbee golf course in the back holes. you will find access to this in the back of the new subdivision in Church creek of vespers drive.Note: this is close to the old Claimed burial grounds.I have seen the spectral anomalies,Ghost if you will, at night in the woods and in the morning. END NOTE. You will also find a salt water access in the wooded are Near the frisby course grate spots here largest I pulled out was 29'" Eels aswell. If you have a cayac its a grate sneek spot to get to the ashley river takes about 2 hours at tide out. Have Fun. Its alot more than The fields That grabe your attention. If anyones in the are and you want a tour hit me up Hadiesfather@gmail...

Tonight was the make up game for one of last week's rained out all star games, and it was disappointing, to say the least. West Ashley was playing against a North Charleston team, and I believe, if the officiating was indeed unbiased, we would have won. Now, I don't blame the ref, I blame the management of the park, for hiring incompetent ref's. We can't blame a referee who has not been formally trained and unable to call obvious handballs or tripping, but I do expect our City parks and recreation team to hire the best of the best, if nothing else, but for our all star players. Totally disappointed in our Parks and Recreation group in charge of West Ashley Park, maybe they need to realize that we, the tax payers, are ultimately your bosses... just saying. I would like for an upper management member to contact me in regards to this review, I am standing by. Best regards,...
