I'm a Queen City native. I grew up going to Freedom Park. A lot has changed. I remember once you crossed the small bridge there were these animals that was attached to a spring that allowed you to rock back and forth and who could forget the black train. Back in the 80's you could actually go inside and go to the top and climb from the top down the side. I loved the basketball courts. I love what Freedom Park has become today with the Carolina Panther section, still have the swings and a remodeled playground for kids of all backgrounds. The baseball and volleyball field. Even a section for your furry pets to fetch frisbees and lounge around. That is what a park suppose to be, people coming together regardless of race to enjoy each other. It's a beautiful place to take wedding pictures, barbeque, read a book, chill with friends, lay on beach towels soaking up some vitamin D. There's a nature museum and tennis courts adjacent to it. If you haven't been to festival in the park, please go. It's not quite the same but it's still worth going with your loved ones. I remember my art picture from elementary was picked to be hung up on the art board out there. Wow! Time flies. You can't go wrong with a gyro, funnel cake, lemon ice, corn dog...

All of this is set on the sugar creek. The Charlotte greenway system runs right along beside the park. Connected by a couple of small pedestrian bridges you’ll get to see a beautiful lake and walking path around a small little island with an amphitheater. The large open lawn is almost like a natural atad seating so everyone could see the amphitheater on the island. During a typical visit you can use on of the bike sharing options get in a run or enjoy the sun on your face while relaxing on the lawn. Most importantly - Yes there are public restrooms and plenty of public parking. The area is well maintained and you feel secure with a decent law enforcement presence walking the area and helping guide traffic on the weekend. I don’t want to forget the large baseball fields that accompany the gem of a public space. I am thankful to have somewhere like this we...
Read moreWe were visiting Charlotte with two preschool aged kids and headed here on a nice day to burn some energy.
A huge trail loops around the pond, complete with a bridge to an amphitheatre—huge hit for my energy-filled kids.
Then we walked to the playground which had a sizable and updated play structure. The swing set had many swings to accommodate a large number of kids. The playground is definitely geared towards 5-12 year olds but our 4 year olds did just fine.
There is an old train that you can go into as well as a parkour park (I think) that we didn't explore.
The bathrooms were clean too.
Highly recommend this stop if you are in the area or trying different parks in Charlotte because it is enjoyable for many ages, especially on a warm...
