My sister & I took the Founders Tour on April 19th. Paul & Mary Liz Stewart were gracious hosts and patient storytellers who -- despite facing strong headwinds from a hostile federal government intent on drastic cuts -- have made this vital place of learning an Albany institution.
This is NOT another polished, "look-but-don't-touch" house museum or reliquary for fossilized history. It is very much a work in progress and a team* project. As a visitor, you are invited not to learn passively from a script or staid exhibits, but to bear living witness to how the brick-and-mortar work of public history, archaeological preservation, and community-building is done. In fact, you are invited to participate. The economic, social, and cultural activism undertaken by Stephen and Harriet Myers is every bit as important today as it was in the 19th century.
If you are local, it's exciting to see how this space, this legacy fits into a broader municipal, regional, national, and international context.
If you are from out of town, it's an opportunity to take this knowledge home with you, to grow the UREC's network of lifelong learners, and to carry on the proud tradition of freedom-seekers everywhere.
*shout out to Lacey, Carol, Amelia, Carmen, Marcus, and all the dedicated staff & volunteers who fill the house with...
