It was looking to be a beautiful fall day up until till the ninth hole. Prior to playing the course Marshall instructed us and very brief request that we only use the cart paths on the front nine. When you go to this course you will realize that cart paths seem to appear and disappear out of nowhere. One second there is a clear gravel or asphalt path and the next second it fades into the fairway. On our ninth hole we were verbally harassed by the game warden who started screaming and swearing saying that he saw us move away from the cart path, which he was correct we were guilty of that. But the fact that me and my friend were harassed and screamed at over something as innocent as accidentally crossing the fairway during the spring season On municipal golf course is ridiculous. I am going to call back the following day and receive the gentlemanâs name and possibly include this in the future review. It is quite common to not get along with course wardens who are more drunk with power than a fresh off the block state trooper, but the fact that they can think that they can verbally harass people and scream at people who made an innocent mistake should not be taken lightly and should be a fireable offense. Beyond the cursing in the harassment this is a beautiful course I just wish they would hire a more noble staff than the person who they hired to supervise the course the day that me and my cousin went. I grew up in Troy and I can sadly say that was the last day Iâll spend a penny at Frear golf course. (Date of...

As an aerial photographer, Iâm always on the lookout for locations that combine natural beauty, open space, and unique textures from aboveâand Frear Park Municipal Golf Course in Troy, NY delivers all three in stunning fashion.
From the droneâs vantage point, the course unfolds like a green patchwork quilt, with rolling fairways, carefully sculpted bunkers, and tree-lined edges that glow with seasonal color. Early mornings reward you with misty fairways and soft golden light, while late afternoons bring dramatic shadows that add incredible depth to every shot.
One of the highlights of my visit was capturing the serene ponds and water features that reflect the sky like mirrors, creating breathtaking symmetry from above. The elevation changes across the course also make for dynamic perspectivesâperfect for sweeping panoramas or tight, detailed compositions.
Frear Park isnât just a golferâs havenâitâs a photographerâs playground. Whether youâre flying a drone or simply enjoying the scenery, the combination of natural landscapes and well-maintained greens offers endless visual opportunities.
This visit left me with a gallery of vibrant images that truly showcase the beauty of Troy. If youâre in the area, whether to play a round or to simply soak in the views, Frear Park is a must-see.

Read moreThis was my first time playing at this course and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of everything. The tee boxes were flat and in good shape, the fairways and rough were fair and well-kept, and the greens while challenging were also kept in great shape. The cost of 9 holes with a cart was around $34 per person, and 18 holes + cart I believe would've been around $45. Compared to other courses in the Capital Region, I'd say for the quality of the course that's pretty great value. The largest downside, which I hope was a one-time thing, was that the pace of play on the course was horrendous. It took my partner and I (both of us are bogey golfers that rarely take more than one practice swing) about 3.5 Hours to play 9 holes with a cart. The groups in front of us were exceptionally slow and held the entirety of the course up. I watched the group in front of us multiple times hit the ball 8, 9, sometimes 10 times, on a hole without picking up and moving on. The starter and Course Marshall (non-existent on a Sunday apparently) absolutely need to do a better job keeping the course moving. Even for the price, it's beyond unacceptable to have to wait 15 minutes on every single tee box to hit. I'm very hopeful that it was a one-time thing, because the course itself is great. Will have to try the pub next time, assuming I can play 18 in...
