Terrible experience! Attendant was rude and refused to let us on as bike riders. The logic was that we didn't have time to get on board, yet he let 6 more cars on after us. Our bikes were already unloaded. All we had to do was ride them down the ramp. We had our bikes loaded back into our truck before the ferry started out, so there would have been time for us to load.

In response to the reply from the ferry, we DID arrive more than 30 minutes before departure time. We were waiting on the first ferry of the day. My husband stayed in line with our truck while I stood with the bikes in the grass close to the pay booth. The attendant was taking his time talking to each customer until us. I was close enough to hear everything he said. As I said in my original post, he let 6 cars that were BEHIND us in line onto the ferry. If we were not allowed to get on the ferry, neither should the 6 cars that were behind us.

The excuse we were given when I called about the incident that day, was not logical. I was told cars get on the ferry faster than we could, but the cars can only go about 5 miles per hour down the loading ramp. Most people can ride a bike downhill faster than that.

There should be a separate line area and signage related to...

Then, you should head out to Fort Morgan and explore an entirely new side of the Gulf Shores / Orange Beach area!

We came with 4 kids and 4 adults. We rode across expecting a trolly ride, got across advised that the trolly wasn’t running. Rode back we were under prepared, but I will say the guy on the side was rude twice. We were advised to be at the boat by 12:30 pm, arrived at 12:25 and he scolded us kind of. Let it slide no biggie. Then on the way back our kids who were sweating and miserable were walking the side walk back to the stop sign when he said wait for the cars to unload. Then I guess to add insult he told us we would have to wait for him to board all the cars. They are chilling in the AC, so as the last car exited we made our way across and he acted as if we broke the law, very smart A$$ish so I answered him with a yes sir but my kids are hot and need some water, he began to say “he told us so this and that it would be hot” then why would you make kids from 1-6 stand in the blazing heat with no shade at all. It’s an awesome experience if it wasn’t for that guy. For that reason I’ll drive across the bridge and spend money on the island. Boat captains were very cool hands...

Lack of communication by staff! We just missed the 17:45 departure but were not worried because we knew there'd be another in 45 minutes at 18:30....except there wasn't. One ship was broken so they were on a one ship 90 minute schedule. It wasn't until 18:30 came and went did we realize the booth attendant never bothered to tell us at any point as we were paying they were down to one ship, despite us having just missed the ferry. If we had known it was a 19:15 departure, we would not have used the ferry, because that meant we caught the last ferry of the day and ended up on Dauphin Island too late to make dinner reservations. What makes me more aggravated is I even checked Facebook to make sure there was availability. The daily Facebook update did not mention a one ship operation until the very bottom of a long post, instead of the top, so it was easy to miss. It would be nice if staff were a little more communicative so incidents like this can be avoided.

The ferry is great. One comes from Fort Morgan to Fort Gaines, Dauphin Island, and the other comes from Fort Gaines, Dauphin Island to Fort Morgan. Both forts are incredible tourist attractions. Beautiful architecture. You can call the toll number or go straight to the ferry kiosk employees for all the information you need about the ferry. You can go as a pedestrian or ride with your vehicle. There are two ferries, one having observation decks. It is a 30 - 45 minute ride across Mobile Bay, with views of scenic areas such as the lighthouse and wildlife like seagulls, pelicans, dolphins and more! The breeze and sights are great. Safety is taken very seriously, as the rides are given via U.S. Coast Guard, which is neat in itself. You can see their headquarters at Dauphin Island with smaller Coast Guard ships docked. It is a fun ride and a cheap activity to do with the family.
