[[Thu.19.Dec.2024]] Was our first time staying at Oglebay Resort, really did not know what to expect, by the look at the images, reviews iwould be nice place. Arrived there earlier this week the view of the resort as pulling up was Magnificent, Huge, Great Views, went into Front Desk checked in which was very nice lay out indoors, check in went easy, quick. Was given a map of resort, showed how to get easy to our room, the entire area from resort was Beautiful Views and we loved seeing the Wildlife out (Deer) and about roaming around. Once to the correct wing where our room was located, hallways was very nice setup what we noticed with the amount of clients vehicles parked outside you could not hear one customer in there room while walking by ((most places you can hear customers laughing and talking)). Once in our room, OMG!!! Wow, very very nice we loved it so much and the Balcony outside was perfect even tho it was lil breezy and cool out it was perfect, room was very clean, bed made very nice and room was spacious, we loved how the bedside lights had adjustable arms on them, just Awesome. We took a walk through the Resort, it defiantly was huge, we loved seeing the Older Pictures and Information on them, we explored the Coffee Gift Shop got us both a drink each and purchased some items from there, then we headed up to second floor ended up at Bar area (which we are a non alcoholic couple for last 34yrs) and we wrapped around corner to a Beautiful Christmas Holiday Hallway, had to have few pics here, then arrived at Restaurant which was huge, spacious with Great view, we had lil later lunch there, the Servers was very nice, food was excellent tasting, once done eating we headed back through the bar and around checked out the Swimming area and Game Room we had Great Time in game room (First thing, i Won a Squawking Chicken lol) we just had straight out Fun. Headed back to room for lil relaxation before heading down to lobby about 9:30pm we paid $20 each for Christmas Light Trolley Tour when we checked in, we arrived at lobby area about 9pm some others came to lobby as well for Tour, we did notice something that just did not sit with us at lobby was while sitting there we seen a few clients sitting down there glass cups from bar on chair tables in the lobby that still had alcohol in them and kids was around and the cups was just unattended just think alcohol drinks should not leave the bar area and end up in lobby sitting on a table unattended. The next thing was the Trolley Christmas Tour, once we get aboard the Trolley the driver stated there were only to be 4-6 individuals on board as what his paperwork stated but there was like 14-16 on board, but driver said oh well ((i do think front desk at resort should know who all has tickets to help driver with this matter, since front desk is charging $20 person)) while out on this Trolley Tour the Driver was having trouble like talking through the Mic cause could hardly hear him at all at times, then there was few times driver came up on other vehicles which was close call accidents waiting to happen cause neither Trolley Driver nor other Driver was going to give the other wright away around certain areas and curves, then there was issue with the Trolley windows they were so so Smeared and Dirty you could hardly see out of them let alone take pic out of them of certain Christmas Displays, about half way through tour i told my wife stop taking pictures its waisting your time cause there going to come out smudged looking and told her after this tour is over her and i would get in our Suv and i would re-do this same Christmas Light Tour in our Suv that its not wright to pay for something and not get what you paid for, so we did re-do the exact same tour back over in our Suv. I do recommend if doing the Trolley Tour for any sort Display Outing take look at inside windows to see if there clear n clean cause if not might be best ask for $20 back and do the tour in your own vehicle. All n All its still Great Place to come to and relax and take in all the Beauty.

I can only speak for this experience during December winterfest which is when our party of 10 including kids stayed in a cabin. Kid Friendly: Great location for small kids. Pool. Easy outdoor things like the zoo, the paths, the carnival, the lights. Lots of wintery themed stuff for two 3 year olds to enjoy. Made the options easy being a parent. Great option for small kid entertainment, although you have to pay extra for things like the carnival rides or a trip to the zoo. But the hot chocolate and candy canes in the lodge are awesome at night and thats free. Cabins: The cabins were perfect for our party of 10 ( 4 adults, 2 grandparents, 4 kids). We lived comfortably and not on top of each other, the rooms all had their own bathrooms too WHICH WAS CLUTCH. The kitchen was great, full fridge, stove, all that. We used the outdoor charcoal grill once for burgers, worked great. Also, the guys come around and pick up trash every morning from your place, which is also awesome. Decor: 7/5 stars. PERFECT PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PICS BRING OUTFITS. Instagrammers and influencers will love it. All the trees and holly and decorations and scenic idyllic stuff, so many options for that cute young person santa hat with a peace sign by an iconic building/sunset/coffee shop with the Tennessee filter picture. Seriously beautiful. Price: its not cheap by any means. The room prices are what i would consider expensive for the average middle class to lower income unless this was their one yearly vacation. Also, it has that extra “resort” charge vibe where everything thats normally cheaper is alittle more expensive without necessarily an increase in the quality of what you are getting. So youre gonna need alot of cash to absorb that. Its not the worst ive ever seen but it is noticeable. Food Options: They werent anything special, the concession stand type establishments were 3/5. We did both options inside the Wilson Lodge. The Glassworks grill casual dining was my favorite, 4/5, recommend the garlic wings, needs more seating. The Ihlenfeld buffet was good but not great, i thought expensive and kind of a thing for a special night only unless you wanted to spend alot. Also with only those 2 sit down options close to the lodging it was packed at dinner times so make reservations. Nature: Excellent. You’re right in the ridges of WV up here and the complex is idyllic. The paths are all paved for the most part, if your looking for more rough hiking trails or off the beaten path type outdoor experience this probably isn’t enough for you. But its great for encouraging easy outdoor activities. Dogs: lots of people had dogs and were walking them about, super dog friendly. Deer: Wow. So many deer. And obviously fed by humans because they will come RIGHT up to you. People stop cars to feed them. People invite them around. So they have 0 problem being around. Like a herd of 50 of them throughout the place scattered about. Just be aware. Museum and Established Old Stuff: its pretty cool. I love that they kept it up, the mansions got lots of great antiques. In all, its a cool place to stay, definitely fun for a winter get away with kids in a place thats cold, its hard to find that up in the north. Im more of a national park person so i want more wild adventure in a location and this is more conventional but its worth a look around for sure. Also, the 65+ crowd loves it so grandparent friendly.

Everyone we encountered at the resort was friendly. The check in process went fairly fast for a long line at 4pm. It was beautifully decorated everywhere for Christmas. I was in a Wilson lodge room at the end of a hallway that did not have any other guest hotel rooms on either side of me (both said hotel staff only) and then there was a guest hotel room diagonal from me. My room was clean and well appointed. Had 6 pillows on my king bed, a comfy sitting chair, and 2 robes and plenty of extra towels. My cousin was in the first room in the hall next to me and her room was totally different than mine and it was very modern and smaller and no robes. She said her room was quiet but bed was terribly hard. My room went from 5 stars to 2 stars after I went to bed. It was so hard that I thought my hips were gonna be bruised from laying on it. Tossed and turned in pain all night. The hallway was so loud at 1am and even at 4am. I did not open the door but being that I was at a dead in with only hotel staff rooms, I can only assume it was hotel staff carrying on and being so loud. What upset me off most of all about this room were the bed sheets. There was no fitted bottom sheet. It had a flat sheet that was not even on the bed properly and my feet were laying on bare mattress. What a jerk move to make a bed this way! Laziness at its best. I got virtually no sleep and was so glad I only had to spend one night in that room. The other areas of the hotel were nice. Listened to a country music singer for awhile and it was a popular event. We walked around and could not find where we were going. The signage does not make sense and it is not accurate everywhere. The spa was next to impossible to find based on signage and luckily another guest knew where it was. Dining options inside the hotel are limited but what we had was good. The light show was pretty, but really spread out and not easy to stay on course in the dark. We ended up back at the starting point and had to get directions as we turned the wrong way following other cars. The new directions where helpful and kept us where there was better signage. I would come back in a heartbeat, but not until they got new mattresses and properly covered said mattress.

Our arrival was on the 11-27-19. When we arrived in our room looked exactly like the photos online. We stayed in the west wing. The room was smaller then we expected. I was not impressed by the cleanliness. For the amount of money you are charged for a room I expected way better. We payed around 250$ a night. That was for magical weekday package during the festival of lights. You can tell the staff is rushed or rushes themselves. Our dresser stand had coffee grounds spilled on it. Okay that's whatever. There was a lot of hair in the tub drain. So okay again whatever. I did not like that our shower curtain was noticeably moldy. We went on the trolly ride to see the lights. That was my favorite. I reccomend you call and reserve a time. The driver was very friendly and knowledgeable. There is so much land I can't wait to see what more light displays they put in the future. The brochure was inaccurate when it came to times for the Thanksgiving holiday. The breakfast buffet was luke warm at best both days. We ate at the Glassworks grill both days. The food was very good but the fries both times were luke warm. I would eat there again just not the fries. If you prefer to eat their on a holiday I recommend reserveing ahead of time for their holiday buffet. The pool setting was gorgeous. The pool temperature was tolerable. The hot tub had a stain around the inside of it. The pool area was not tidy. Towels, trash, broken toys laying around both days we were there. It's to bad people just can't pick up after themselves. The whole lodge was just beautifully decorated. Not an inch of it was not. We also visited the Good zoo. All the staff was friendly and the enclosurers were clean. I don't really recommend the wagon ride from the frosted hilltop experience. It was 8$ a person. You do not see anything different (light displays) then you would driving around. If anything you see way less. Our driver was nice though. It's not his fault. He did his job. It was nice to getaway and enjoy light festival all in all.

Summer of 2024 went for a family vacation I met friends there twice. Especially love the bird wing room. The patio opened up to the courtyard easy access to the indoor pool. Kids were able to play in the courtyard where they had a big piece chess game that the kids just went crazy over. There is firewood available and we made s'mores at night. I decided to make this a family tradition and I already have two bookings for the summer coming, plus another one my son-in-law made for us. This will be his first time. He is a golfer and I assured him he will love it! We swam the indoor pool and outdoor pool! Went on the trolley ride through the zoo (which if you can't do a lot of walking it's nice because you can still get off the trolley and re-board, play mini golf, Winton swan paddle boats on the small lake and had picnics in their picnic areas! I think this year the kids might try the warrior adventures with ropes and all kinds of climbing things. Can't wait to go back! The rooms were clean, the deluxe doubles were small. Service there was great! The second night when we didn't have firewood for s'mores the park ranger brought us more! And pretty quick too. The location was great! They have wildlife and plenty of shade. Benches at various places where you could rest. Beautiful gardens near and flowers. Our favorite place to get ice cream was an old fashion candy/gift shop. We got ice cream and set out in the flower garden! Beautiful views of a nearby mountain! We found a great place to eat lunch too that was very reasonable and you could eat inside or out. It was right next to the golf course. Great walking trails! I can't say enough about this wonderful place! Except for if you really want to go book early!! It's my favorite Summer place!

We stayed in one of the older rooms (Lakeview side) this past weekend. We didn’t mind the older feel to it. My kids absolutely loved it and thought it was super “fancy”. We were in the very first room. The bathtub and shower were great. The size of the room was nice for 2 adults and 3 kids under 10. There was a door in the room that we could use to walk outside without having to go back through the lobby area. There was a cozy fire place. It was a great atmosphere for a winter stay. The small dresser chest at the foot of the bed was stained up. It could definitely use a good clean. Other than that we enjoyed our nights stay and would like to plan a longer stay in the future. The vending and game room were a little bit of a journey to get to. It is a huge place. We did feel awkward when we first arrived to check in and all the guests were dressed up very fancy and we seemed very out of place. Then when the receptionist told us we were on the other side of the lodge I thought to myself “okay, that makes more sense”. Maybe one day we’ll make it to the fancy side lol but for now we’re fine with the other side. It was fancy enough for us. There was plenty of parking. You could see some of the Festival of Lights from the parking lot. I’m sure the higher rooms had a great view of them. Check out was very easy. They sent an email saying to leave our keycards in the room and we didn’t have to stop back in the main building to checkout. We didn’t get to check out the restaurants or pool. Bonus points: my kids had the best time ever playing with the wrapped up bars of soap… who would have known lol. One kid would hide them then the other 2 would go searching the room. So that kept them pretty entertained so we could relax.
