Tunney Hunsaker Bridge — Attraction in Fayetteville

We visited New River Gorge National Park this Fall to enjoy the foliage, sights, trails and adventures this park has to offer. When we seen the Tunney Hunsaker Bridge from the 'Catwalk Tour' of the Route 19 bridge this past summer, we knew had to travel down to it. The trip down on the Fayette Station Road was loaded with hard turns steep pitches, views of the underside of the Route 19 bridge, as well as beautiful scenery it was well worth the effort. Our views from down on the old bridge mixed with underside of the Route 19 bridge supporting structure was awesome to behold and provides a glimpse of the herculean task undertaken by the bridge builders. Going over the old wood decked bridge that rattled and banged as our tires hit the boards added to trip, it was like going on an old wooden roller coaster...LOL We stopped at the parking area next to the river near the bridge and spent sometime exploring the area taking pictures and enjoying the day. This is a must-see for the area. There are many sights to see in the New Gorge National Park like the Sandstone Falls, overlook, the New Gorge Bridge, and others. This is definitely one of the sites that you should see if you are visiting this area. It is not just one site, the Fayette Station bridge, it is an entire drive with some great spots and pullouts along the way. This drive starts on the north side of the bridge behind the visitor’s center on the road to the right (the one that goes downhill). It is a well-paved road that has 2 switchbacks and a pullout or two on the north side and then you are down by the river and driving across the bridge. There is a place to stop by the bridge for those that want to walk across it. There is a park on the south side a little bit down from the bridge. The south side road taking you back up to the main road also has some very nice views along the way. This is a wonderful drive that is well worth the time and effort. We did the Fayette Station Road drive and it was beautiful! I would recommend checking out the drive - we had a great time with beautiful views of the bridge and river. The drive winds down from near the Visitors Center and follows a switchback road from that crosses under the bridge itself twice. You are then able to cross the old bridge right over the water and you are taken to a couple different spots where you can pull off and eat (if you've packed any food or snacks)! There is also hiking opportunities near the pull-offs for even more spectacular scenery. I highly recommend, especially if you have time to take it slow and easy! You will pop out back on 19 across the river so you can always head into Fayetteville for lunch or...
