This museum popped up on TripAdvisor and Google Maps. After some googling and researching Reddit posts, I found that it appears this is a newer museum, and it is highly recommended.
It takes a little bit of a different angle than the other museums we saw in the area.
This one focuses more on Gettysburg itself. It's origins. Founders. Native American population. Natural sciences.
It also takes the angle of telling stories from those civilians who survived the Battle and the toll it took on them.
The museum is not that large so you don't have to budget a lot of time for it. We budgeted about 4 to 5 hours just in case (mostly cuz we've learned our lesson in the past that sometimes we underestimate and we also have an infant). We completed the museum experience in about an hour and a half.
What I really appreciated about this facility is how clean and new it is. The bathrooms were definitely the best we've seen so far on our trip. They also had diaper changing station covers! It would seem like nobody, from restaurants to gas stations to museums to fast food places to grocery stores seem to have these.
I also felt that the staff was very friendly and courteous. Very welcoming.
There was not a wait wait at the ticket counter and the exhibits were not too crowded.
The two exhibits that I think I enjoyed the most. Only because I think kids would really enjoy them. Is the tavern style activities highlighting the revolutionary war as well as the bystanders experience in the house. You get to relive being a bystander in the Attic of a house that's at the center where the two armies meet. Pretty wild.
Overall though, I feel like some of the exhibits could use a little bit more oomph since they were very brief and the museum small. I do like having videos to complement the experience. I will not take any stars away from that.
Overall, I think this is definitely worth the visit But it's not something I foresee coming back to you in the future, unless the...
Read moreWe visited many museums in Gettysburg this week, each one different and worthwhile to see. This new museum, just a bit over a year old, is owned and run by the Adams County Historical Society. We spoke to several of the volunteer docents, who said having enough space for their extensive collection of artifacts and photos, after years of planning, is “a dream come true.”
After paying a small fee and getting a map, you enter the museum which is laid out in rooms for various time periods from prehistoric days in Pennsylvania until our current decade. The exhibits are well lit, interesting, and informative. There are some short videos too. Be sure to go in the “ Caught in the Crossfire” room, which lets you experience the effects of the Battle of Gettysburg as though you lived in a house in the town! The noise, flashing lights, and explosions are thrilling rather than life threatening, luckily!
There was a group of students when we were there completing worksheets for a school project, and I’m sure this museum is a valuable learning resource for all the nearby schools. Plenty of parking, nice restrooms, and a small snack...
Read moreThe new museum presented by the county historical society Gettysburg Beyond the Battlefield provides a nice presentation of the founding, developing, and grow of Gettysburg PA. The museum does a great job of telling the story of life in Gettysburg from the early days to the battle and to the present.
The highlight is an experience in which you enter a house as it would have been on the first day of the Battle at Gettysburg. The meal is on the table, the family is in the basement, and the battle is raging around you. You feel the fright of the moment as cannons fire, bullets whize past, and the Confederate soldiers are entering.
The only challenge I had is that the museum has some really good films and narrations but the overall space design does not offer seating to appreciate these various...
