This was a fun experience. However, I do have to say there weren't that many animals. The vast majority were deer. But let me give the rundown of how my visit went...
My husband and I went. We were told not to even roll our windows down until passing a certain point (a red pole). Things were going ok. Then we get to a gate and were told not to feed the animals until passing another point. There were two cars ahead of us that did NOT listen. And because of them there were swarms of deer in the road making it impossible to even drive past them. Not a huge deal but a slight annoyance nonetheless. This was also the area with the bison.
Now I get it, we didn't just come to feed the animals but to see the animals. But roughly 200+ deer look the same, doing the same stuff. We dont have to stop and stare at each individual one. So sitting for 10+ minutes while two cars feed them (after being told not to) was not that fun an experience. When we were finally creeping forward the deer would get in front of our car and just stand there, while others stood on the side of the car. I had to open my window and shake the cup of food to get them to go to the side. And a white bison snatched the entire cup out of my hand. That was fun! (No sarcasm included with that last statement, lol). I couldnt even be mad because a young bison was nursing on her just before that. Although I do feed bad because that cup was spilled on the floor of course causing a swarm behind us (sorry to all the cars afterward. I promise it was not intentional!)
I will also add, some of the deer had growths. Some golf ball sized, some bigger. That may be normal as I dont see too many deer up close and personal. I dont know, I'm not a deer expert. Moving along, there werent that many more animals too see. And the ones we did didn't interact (except the giant eland towards the end).
With half a cup of food left, we went through the walk-thru safari. There was a good amount to see. I just wish the gift shop had better AC, since you're forced to pass through it. And finished the trip with one last pass through the drive-thru safari to give out the last of the food. There were less cars the second time but the same swarming of the deer, lol.
Overall it was a good experience. Need to try on a day that isnt so hot and we'd maybe get better animal interaction. I also wish they had a slightly better variety of animals in the drive-thru portion. Oh! And buy the tickets online if you can....
Read moreWe visited today, and we really had an overall excellent experience. I really just want to express how refreshing it was to literally have every employee we came in contact with, just generally seem happy, helpful, and like their job. (In my own personal experience these days, that seems rare.) We drove 2 hours, and had 4 small children in our group. They had a really great time. It really is a whole different experience! Super cool! The Cleanliness of the entire facility was very much appreciated! Everything we encountered seemed to be very well taken care of, and I believe you guys have it down! I don’t want to have that go unnoticed! In the days of Covid, and having small children, that’s super important to me. We took advantage of the Groupon. I feel like that was a great deal, so thank you for extending that. We purchased the $45 food option for the drive-thru attraction, and truly wish, half way through I had bought 2! Haha. Very awesome to be able to have that kind of encounters with all of the animals. My only qualm, and the reason for the 4 stars would be that- in my Opinion- there has got to be a way (and I know they’re animals) to reign all of them in when you are told to roll your windows up- I literally had an Elk biting, and attempting to eat my window weather strip, and I really didn’t know what to do. (Luckily, no real damage- and that’s not what is important for me at least in this review.) I just feel as if the employees on the golf carts, should pay better attention to things like that, and protect the animals, and the patrons. If that makes sense? I have a new car, and I didn’t totally know what to expect when we came today, so I’m sure there are others like me, and potentially could cause bigger issues. Just a thought. We did the camel ride. Both the guys working that attraction were very nice, and patient with my indecisive 3 year old who wanted to, But actually didn’t want to ride Gage. Love the fact you have a playground to allow the kids to play. The girls at the Pig show did awesome! We enjoyed that. We ate some ice cream, We took advantage of the mining. That was cool as well. Overall. Great experience! We...
Read moreBoy, African Safari Wildlife Park up in Port Clinton, Ohio is one of the best dang places you’ll ever drag your family for a day of wild fun and creature comfort. I tell you what, this place ain’t no stale zoo where you gawp through bars. Here you roll through in your own car, at your own pace, feed the animals from a cup out the window, and watch critters come right up to say howdy. You can take your time, no rush, soak up the views, snap a ton of photos—and it’s all included with your admission. No need to pay extra just for the good stuff.
The park’s history is just as heartwarming as the animals. Opened back in 1973, this was the Midwest’s original Drive-Thru Safari Park. Over the decades they’ve expanded big-time in 2021 they broke ground on a 22-acre extension to their Drive-Thru Safari so even more animals can roam free and more folks can get up close without crowding or fuss.
Animal keepers and staff? Shoot, they’re amazing. Friendly, passionate, and always ready to answer questions. They care for these animals right making sure each giraffe, zebra, bison, alpaca, elk, even rare white zebra or giant eland, are comfortable. The Walk-Thru Safari section (“Safari Junction”) gives you kangaroos, porcupines, tortoises, rare white alligators etc., plus animal shows, HogWILD experience with pigs, and educational programs that actually teach somethin’.
One of the toughest patches they’ve been through was a barn fire back on Thanksgiving 2019 killed some animals, including giraffes, red river hogs, bongos and a springbok. But the team pulled through. They rebuilt, kept going, expanded, and kept giving folks those wild close-ups and unforgettable memories.
What I love most: for whatever you pay for admission, you get unlimited drive-thru safari time, plus walk-thru safari, the EduZoo programs, HogWILD, feeding experiences, all without nickel-and-diminishing every little encounter.
If you ain’t been, you gotta go. Bring your sense of wonder, your camera, maybe a jacket (weather can change), and soak up every minute. This park is pure redneck-tested, family approved...
