Well-maintained and paved trail that's around 10 miles long. Mostly flat, but at each end there's an optional 100 ft hill to climb - on the east-side just past Anglers Park and on the west-side climbing into Ballou Park. Good navigation signs and maps, so it's hard to get lost.
For some odd reason (property-rights issue, I'm guessing), near the west end there's a short, narrow dirt portion that goes behind one industrial lot. Just west of that section, take a right on Commerce St, then quick left on Trade St to re-join the trail in a few blocks (otherwise, the main trail appears to dead-end a few blocks west of Commerce St).
Along the way, there are lots of great views of the Dan River, two dams, parks, Ghost Tree Island, former textile mills and tobacco warehouses.
