ISKCON Detroit, in the Fisher Mansion, is a place that offers an awe-inspiring experience that must be had by all! Upon arrival, I first noticed the architecture. Wow! The details and colors are so fascinating and they excited every part of me! I wanted to explore every inch of this exquisite establishment. I was greeted by Madhu Mahadevan and his lovely wife, Amisha Mahadevan. They happily gave me a formal introduction to the Hare Krishna philosophy. They both made my first experience a very exciting one, full of intrigue and genuine admiration. I appreciate, very much, all of the time and care they put into translating their knowledge to ensure I understood everything I could possibly understand during my first visit. I was given a tour and a thorough explanation of every activity that takes place during the Sunday feast. I was offered an opportunity to join the festivities, which include prayers, chanting, dancing, worship and praise, as well as, a delectable vegetarian meal. This is all free of charge. There is a suggested donation of $3 per person and $10 per family, but it is only a suggestion and not a requirement. The donations help with expenses necessary to keep this amazing sanctuary available for every person from any background to enjoy. Everyone is welcome to participate right along with the followers of Hare Krishna. I did and it was incredibly exhilarating!
I am looking forward to visiting the temple, upon my return to Detroit, and seeing the Mahadevan family again, as they are so humble, kind, and sincerely want to educate others on the beauty of all things Hare Krishna; they have both truly enlightened me. This experience is profoundly sublime!

Read moreWowie, what an amazing spot in Detroit. This property has a rich history of being developed by early Detroit auto magnates. It was a fabulous mansion that hosted such luminaries as Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe at lush parties. It even had almost unheard of luxuries like indoor dockage for a yacht. Then fast-forward to the mid 1970s and with the help of Beatle George Harrison and ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) founder, Swami Srila Prabhupada, it was purchased and became a temple for the Hare Krishna movement. Wow, what an interesting and varied history!
The property now hosts a Sunday chanting/lecture service and weekly devotional activities for the Krishna devotees who live and serve there and in the surrounding neighborhood. This is a living breathing temple for an ancient religion from India. Many people in the Indian community in Detroit make this their home temple to worship, but there's also a good mix of others and all are welcomed open armed.
The Krishnas are well known for their free vegetarian feast on Sunday and it's the same here. It's best to arrive around 4:30 - 5pm on Sunday if you want to eat as there will be a large (usually fast moving) line. Even better, arrive a bit earlier and explore the grounds and temple. Chanting and participating in the service is optional, but it is illuminating and a great way to open up your vistas and experience a different religion and culture. I have never found the devotees or anyone here to be pushy or proselytizing, only helpful.
Bring an open mind and a healthy appetite and this is a unique and special place to spend a Sunday...
