If you happen to be driving through Wisconsin and are into religious icons or single-minded borderline-obsessive creations, it's worth a detour to see this creation in Dickeyville, WI. It's a religious grotto, like you can find around many catholic churches/monasteries/convents, but this is among the most ornate/impressive ones I've seen. It's definitely more colorful than most, but without being gaudy/garish. You can tell this was a labor of love/devotion. The main "installations" were neat, but I think what really got me was that even the "ropes" surrounding all the areas/gardens were made out of stones - that took some serious work/dedication. This place is a work of art. I am not religious and I could still very much appreciate this grotto. The level of detail is amazing. I came on a weekday morning about 10am and the weather was great. I was walking around the main spot for the 3rd time (you can see something new everyone you look) when someone from the church greeted me and I was offered a tour. What a great way to see it. She showed me all the work, gave me the background how it started and explained to me what everything meant. I really enjoyed it and think it’s a good stop to see...

I was passing through and caught a glimpse of something sparkling in the sun and had to turn around. Wow, this is one of the most mesmerizing places I've ever stumbled on!! The sheer number of rocks, petrified wood, shells and other little treasures that make up these sculptures is incredible! You can literally feel the amount of love & thought put into these- and all by just one person! The history portrayed on one of the sculptures (Columbus) isn't accurate, but hey, it was 1920 so I'm letting it slide :) Highly recommend- definitely nothing...
