I only visited because I felt I might as well do so since I was going to the Houma’s house &gardens but nope, this museum can be skipped & probably should be skipped unless prices drops to like $5.
I considered giving them 2 stars (instead of 1) because of a small section focused on people of color but there’re other places you can take your money to instead, where it may actually support their communities too & you’ll probably still learn just as much and more than here.
There are things/painting to see but a big part of the space was occupied by an exhibit about all the plantations from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. I never expect in a museum to see so many walls of just written information or timelines… I genuinely feel I would have been better off just purchasing a book instead or saving my money completely & just reading Wikipedia tbh. Ironically, the rest of the actual items on display sometimes felt like they didn’t have enough text/description about their importance/reason to be there. Another big part of the space was wax figures; while impressive (creeped me out a little), it doesn’t feel right for that to be a highlight to a museum that doesn’t seem to be about that…In conclusion, I unfortunately just can’t recommend the museum at its current price &...
Read moreWe have been to Houmas House several times and this time we were bringing my brother, who had never been. The museum has been added since we were here last. We spent about 3 hours going through it. The displays were outstanding. My only complaint would be that some items have little or no information about them & others have so much, you couldn't get through the museum in 3 days if you read it all. We thoroughly enjoyed it, but figured out early that we had to just skim the information on much of it or we wouldn't get to see it all before they closed, and it was extra frustrating to have so MUCH information on one item and then none on another. I would recommend they go back through and try to balance these out. It would create a much more enjoyable experience for visitors as this truly is a wonderful...
Read moreI went to the Houmas House and toured the house and gardens. The folks at the Houmas House told me the Great River Road Museum was a completely separate entity. I went to the Great River Road Museum afterwards and found that they had a combo ticket that would have saved money. When I asked if I could buy the entrance at the reduced price due to the mixup at the Houmas House (and I showed my receipt) the lady at the counter told me that it was impossible. I would have to pay full price. As a matter of principle I walked out. The lady sarcastically wished me "Have a nice day". I will never be back and I recommend you avoid this museum simply because they have no...
