We dined here yesterday for a dear friend's birthday. I hadn't been there in years, and the place is still so beautiful. It would be the ideal restaurant for a dinner party or social gathering.
I had the scallops appetizer and wish they'd been seared properly as they mostly weren't seared, but they were fresh and meaty. The honey butter and biscuits shaped like dragonflies were scrumptious. The bread could have been fresher, though.
The ultimate delight, however, was the curried crawfish bisque with corn. It was absolutely superb, and all at the table agreed.
After our meal we were presented a paper with dessert options, but at the top of the page there was an entree option, halibut, listed. My cousin remarked that she would have quickly ordered the halibut, but didn't know about it as the server obviously hadn't informed us of that daily special. The server gave an odd reply when questioned about how the paper's just printed that way listing the desserts and the entree option, instead of simply saying she'd forgotten to tell us about the daily special.
All that said, it was a lovely atmosphere--but the pink Christmas trees do need to be removed as it's nearly March!--and we would definitely return, hoping halibut is on the menu and we are...
Read moreDO NOT HAVE A LARGE GROUP OR CHRISTMAS PARTY HERE! Our group of 9 had the worst experience at Carriage House for my partners office Christmas dinner. Once we learned where the party would take place in August, I was thrilled, as I had never been there, and being a huge old Hollywood fan, loved the idea of seeing where Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte was made. Had I only known! Reservations were for 7pm...the party began showing up at 6pm to have drinks....at 8:30pm, we were being given a table. The staff was the least bit apologetic, or even acknowledged there was a problem. Halfway through dinner, we noticed butter dishes and bread knives- but no bread or butter was brought to the table! After we asked for bread, and as we were finishing dinner, about 20 minutes later, bread arrived. We left devastated. Thankfully the beauty of the place is undeniable because it was the only saving grace of the evening. Houmas House may be best...
Read moreWOW! We stumbled upon this restaurant while traveling through from TX to New Orleans. I was very surprised that this restaurant is within a historical site with a museum and a gorgeous gift shop. The walk to the restaurant is breathtaking with ponds, fountains, and a 600 year old oak tree that is gorgeous! The service was outstanding, and so was the food! We had the short rib, the chicken, and a Ceasar salad and Houmas salad. All were delicious, and the sauces and sides were on point. The chicken was so tender that I'm pretty sure it was sous vide before it was finished, truly moist and delicious. Honestly, this is a SPECIAL place. They welcomed us in even though we were not in fine clothing. Lauren, our server, was very sweet. We also met the owner and his awesome dog. This is a MUST TRY! It's worth a destination dinner or to spend the day. It is a perfect place... I...
