I typically avoid shopping at Food City due to the poor cleanliness and upkeep of the stores. However, on occasion, I’ve stopped by for specialty packaged items. Unfortunately, every visit reinforces my concerns. I’ve seen dead flies in the bakery section near the fresh baked goods, which raises serious health and safety questions. The meat department is especially concerning, as the quality of their products often feels questionable.
On December 31st, I decided to make menudo for my family and went to Food City to purchase beef tripe, as Fry’s—my preferred store—was out of stock. I first purchased 4.5 lbs of tripe from the butcher at $4.99/lb around 1:30 PM. A couple of hours later, I returned to get more, only to find that the packaged tripe had increased to $5.99/lb. Out of curiosity, I checked with the butcher, and indeed, the price had been hiked within just two hours. While frustrated, I had no choice but to buy it.
When I got home and began preparing the tripe, I discovered that not all of it was beef honeycomb tripe. Additionally, it was filled with small black hairs and other impurities—completely disgusting and inedible. I had to bag it and put in fridge for return and ordered pizza for dinner instead.
I will be returning this meat and hope the manager will refund me for the total amount. Price gouging, like raising prices by a dollar within hours, feels unethical and should be illegal.
It’s disheartening that Food City continues to operate in such poor conditions. Surprise really needs a clean, reliable store that offers authentic Mexican products without sacrificing quality or ripping off...
Read moreI came here with my husband and left maybe about 10 minutes ago so about 8:38 am so it’s super early and we were missing a few things at home and the male manager that was there apparently didn’t have anything better to do than to walk by us and stand there with mas look on his face while we were picking out a queso fresco for the dinner we are making later today and the cashier that checked us out the one closer to the veggie section talked to us in English so obviously we spoke back in English and when she handed the receipt she said the change in Spanish (which we also speak) but with a upset look.
Update: Came here with my family again and we got checked up at the register with this same elderly woman that grabbed my bag of bread from the bakery and asked Al upset how many turnovers I had and I responded “I honestly didn’t count them” then she proceeded to ask me “ Do you even know what turnovers are” I answered “obviously that’s why I am getting them” she points at them and squishes my bread and says “these , these are turnovers” and I told her “ obviously and the others are concha’s or “pan” 🙄 . She was huffing and puffing upset like I was the one that offended her when she’s bullying her customers and the hypocrisy to wear the “Evil eye” jewelry every and hair accessories when you’re the one attracting it 🫤 also she porposely turned her name tag over but it’s the oldest cashier working that flirts with all the men their in front of their wives and wears...
Read moreWhile not a "supermarket" on a grandiose scale, it is definitely a SUPER market. I am able to find ingredients and products here that simply aren't carried at other stores. Their meat market is amazing quality as well. I'm not sure exactly what they do differently in their marinade for carne asada, but it is pretty addicting. Their prices are extremely reasonable and quite often best their competitors.
To the reviews regarding cleanliness. I have always found it clean, just showing it's age. There is a difference between cleanliness and worn down. You're also complaining of cost... I don't see it. Their prices are either on par with or beat every competition they have. And "Food Stamp People"??? You lost all respect for the review at that. God forbid you were ever in a financial situation that required you to seek assistance. The entire toxic tone of that review screams of an entitled and elitist attitude that is not wanted in a true...
