I have touched on my father's wartime experience only a small bit. He chose to never speak of his experience and I respected his feeling. He passed in 1999 and my interest has piqued some in these training years. Finding he was radioman on a B-24 in WWII. Searching, I found 3 airworthy B-24 Liberators, these located in the USA and maintained by groups. Finally deciding I would like to really get into a Liberator, whether airworthy or not, to see and feel as close to what my father experienced in training.

I located the Evansville Wartime Museum, as they had one of the B-24s on display, Diamond Lil, based out of Texas. I purchased tickets for a 30 minute flight, which included access to all of the museum exhibits. The following day, the B-24 flew to a new location for similar tours.

I will tell you that everything was professional, well explained and all managed by an army of volunteers. The flight and additional time in the plane was...

Something for everyone. I am a history buff and am elderly and in a wheelchair. I have been asking my family to take me to see it. Finally we all got together for my birthday. "The staff was wonderful and knowledgeable. Ages ranged from 30's to 80. Each person walked away with a greater sense of pride in Evansville's part in WWII and also learned about other wars and areas of our world. The tour we took lasted approx. 2 1/2 hours due to asking questions and taking pictures. Each display offered so much. At the end of our tour with a guide we still were not ready to leave. We took more pics and browsed through the gift shop. We even were mesmerized by the wallpaper and postcard hall. The whole family walked away with so much knowledge and pride. When you go try out the simulator machines and experience taking off in a plane and/or helicopter, flying it and then landing it. Wow what...

This place is incredible. We booked a tank ride months ago and the tank broke, ending rides…but we didn’t know. The staff (especially Cole) worked hard to “make it right” by allowing us to tour. Frank spent 2 hours with my son, showing him the ins and outs of tanks, planes, cars and guns in the museum. My son even spent time flying a couple of different planes in the simulator. It was an incredible experience for both of us. The history represented and the artifacts presented were great! My huge gratitude goes to the docents, who serve to share this knowledge, answer questions, engage visitors and keep the stories alive. I’m really grateful to Frank and his teammates for the...

The Evansville Wartime Museum is an excellent place to visit and learn more about the history of war and the role that Evansville played. They have many historical facts about the different wars fought, and several displays of war memorabilia including a WWII tank, a P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft and a Boeing Stearman WWII training aircraft. There are many other historical examples from WWII including models of military aircraft, ships and other weapons. They had a B-29 Bomber on static display on the day we were there. You could take a tour, and if you wanted to spend some $$$$$ you could take a flight in this historic aircraft. Check out some of the photos from the Museum….
