Absolutely incredible! If you visit Albuquerque you gotta make the trip up to the top of Sandia Peak and soak in the view. On a clear day you can see the entire city (and much further) laying below, and all the twinkling lights at night are so pretty from the top of this mountain.

The drive up/down the paved highway isn't too crazy (but be careful and take the curves slow) and there are numerous spots to stop for a picnic or hike. You'll pass the ski area and at the top there is a little visitor center/gift shop that isn't open very often. There's also an area on the way up for sledding in the winter when there's a good deal of snow.

The temperature at the top is likely to be chilly even on the hottest of days so be sure to bring a jacket and wear pants & socks. Bring plenty of water too! There are a couple of trails nearby, some of which bring you to the edge of a cliff without railings like the ones that you find around the parking lot... Watch your step!

The trees are really tall up there at two miles above sea level (and a mile above the city), it's such a dramatic contrast to the plant life at lower elevations. Around the viewing platform there are some informative signs with facts about them. If you're lucky you might spot some wildlife in the area like deer, bears & birds.

There used to be a lot more flowing water up there but drought has drastically affected the Sandia Mountains and put the region in danger of wildfires. DO NOT light any campfires or smoke outdoors while visiting! High winds can quickly cause flames to spread.

Have fun, be safe and enjoy the...

Been there 100 times at least. Greatest sunsets and sunrises in the world. Sandia Crest is best for Sunsets. A little down from there on the east side of the mountain is where you can catch the most spectacular sunrises. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, you can’t beat these views on any given day. At night you can see the city of Albuquerque all lit up and you can see Santa Fe on...
